COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

On tap. Pours a yellow/gold color with thin, bubbly white head. Aroma is skunk, sweet, and some bread. Taste is rather watery with hints of lemon. More fruitiness as it warms with some grape flavors. More bread in the aroma as it warms.

Draft on Bierkeller. Light fruity aroma, very drinkable and refreshing. Malty taste with delicious hop bitterness.

Pours an effervescent pale yellow on tap with quickly dissipating white head that doesn’t really lace. Aroma of pale lager maltiness, taste follows, kind of bready or biscuit like. Bubbly and easy to drink, but not what I’m looking for.

Bottle, 330 ml, bought in Germany. Poured into an alt glass. ABV 4.8% One finger of white, froathy head, with low retention and no lacing on the glass. This one starts disappointing. Pale golden yellow on the body, minimal activity in it. Aroma is nothing special, grass, hay and some malts. Taste is ordinary too. Sweet malts at first, becomes slighty bitter on the aftertaste. Again grass, some fruity apple notes and hay, but not the dirty one you find in cheap lagers. Medium body, quite carbonated. Overall, maybe I don’t get the style or maybe it’s just a mediocre example, but I think I can find lots of cheap canned beers that taste like that in my local supermarket.

Bottle. So I’m looking forward to this as I had a really nice German kolsch earlier in the day and I’m hoping this will be a nice nightcap. Pour is a clear gold with a quickly fading sudsy white head. Aromas are questionable based on my experience earlier today. A little bit of grain dust, some light fruit and a hint of spice. This could definitely be more intriguing to the nose. Flavor is not great either... Kind of a watery bread dough with a little bit of spice... Hinting on too sweet, this beer is not my favorite in the style. I miss out on the spice and fruits that I associate with a nice kolsch.

Bottle. Pours crystal clear pale golden with airy white head. Clear aroma of hops and yeast with a subtle paper note. Bitter, hoppy flavour, ending on a solid but not unpleasant cardboard note. Dry aftertaste. An OK Kölsch, even though it is not my favourite style.

Tap at Gaffel am Dom, 26/04/13. Clear pale golden with a decent sized white head. Nose is palr malts, light citrus, grass, touch of hops. Taste comprises pale malts, citrus, light lemon notes, grass. Medium bodied with light spritzy carbonation, dry and crisp in the finish. Decent refreshing Kolsch.

Pale and clean yellow with a white head. Ligth hoppy aroma. In mouth, little bit more hoppy and citrus, but no more. Cereal in the end. Medium/high carbonation. Ok for warm days, but not my style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This beer was the first beer I ever drank, I still remember it to this day. Not much aroma to the beer, the appearance was a nice golden color to it, the taste a sweet taste with a bitter bite to it (I like bitter beers). the body of the beer was light, with a thin texture to it, no carbonation at all, the finish was bitter yet palatable. Overall I very much enjoyed this beer I drank it in the shadow of the Cologne Cathedral in Koln Germany, I seek this beer out today although it’s hard to find.
