UPDATED: MAY 7, 2015 Für mich ein klasse Bier.

Gutes Sommerbier!

I grew up with Kölsch, a beer no one outside the region really likes because it’s quite light and refreshing in taste. Outsiders would say: it’s thin and watery. I am not sure about Sonnenhopfen. There are these nice citrus aromas, but underneath a hint of drainpipe. On the palate it is a little too sweet for my taste. Reminds me strongly of shandy. Maybe I should try it again in summer sitting outside in a park. I like the idea that a traditional brewery which does only one beer tries something new inspired by the craft beer movement, but the result is still too much on the shandy side.

50cc Bottle. Amidst the kolsch and the kolsch I had the great surprise of having this beer. Hazy blond with frothy white head. Sweet and wheaty background with nice marked but at the same time subtle citric and fruity hops. Great beer.

Very different than any beer I’ve had in Germany. Tastes a bit like a shandy or something of the sort. I enjoyed it but it wasnt wonderful.

Fasche 50cl. Schöne Hopfenblume, fruchtig, citrusartig. Erfreulicherweise gut abgestimmt, schmeckt nicht wie Radler. Im Nachtrunk schnell abklingend. Gut gemacht!

Aroma: pineapple, mango, pilsner malts. Appearance: hazy straw color, white head. Taste: medium bitterness (mango), pineapple, some herbs, kolsch notes, quite watery and slightly empty. Palate: low body and medium carbonation, bitter finish. Overall: Surprising beer, nice fresh bitterness.

Bottled (backlog). Orangeish golden colour with a mediumsized white head. Aroma is earth, some mild saltiness as well as some bready notes and a quite strong citric hoppiness to it. Flavour is citrus hoppiness, some bready and mild grainy malts to it as well. Fresh and nice, easy to drink and a bit on the watery side. But as for a warm Summer terrace, this would be pretty much perfect.

0.5L bottle. Pours hazy pale wihta frothy white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is not particularly pleasant: lots of sulfur, some hay, leaves and citrus. Flavor is mild to medium sweet, slightly citrusy. Middle flavors develop some nuttiness, with sweetness giving way to a mild, herby hop flavor that linger. Light body with a thin mouthfeel and sharp carbonation. Overall, not the most pleasant beer on a number of levels. Aromas are pretty off-putting, and flavor is unidimensional and just sort of sweetish.
