Our tribute to the beers that once quenched the thirst of parched colonials at Admiral Gage’s East India station. This UK-style IPA is rich with caramel malt and overripe stone fruit character, balanced with a big bitter finish.

bottle from bws in broadbeach. steady enough ipa - golden, hints of mango in the aroma, modest bitterness, generic citric aftertaste, nothing really standing out

330ml bottle. I was a bit disillusioned with Gage Roads recent offerings but this one hits the mark. Deep copper brown colour with a beige foam cap. Aroma is packed full of bready malty hops, along with caramel and toffee.Strong flavour that sits well in the mouth. Good finish and well balanced .

420 yen, 5.4% Bottle from a small liquor shop midway between the Sky Tree & Asakusa. Bought to get rid of that Virgo beer’s memory and due to the fact I’ve never seen this "fine craft beer from Australia" in Japan before. Served in a mini Duvel type glass a deep orange-gold with a decent head & a fruity peppery nose with strong citrus & earthy notes - interesting. Medium to full bodied with a tongue scraping bitter mouthfeel - in a good way. The taste is again pretty different from IPAs I am used to, earthy, lemongrass, citrus, pepper & quite bitter. Pretty damn good, a pleasant surprise at a great price for Japan. Best before feb 2014 this must be a hoppy beast fresh.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Light copper pour with a small white head. Mainly toffee malts, not a lot of hop character in there

Clear honey coloured body with short head. Figs and apricots in the aroma and the taste, low in carbonation and medium body. Pick the dry hopping. Drinkable.

Bottle. Darkish amber with a medium light beige head. Aroma of toffee, peaches, grapefruit, a suggestion of pine. Sweet and a bit watery. Lots of rather plain toffee in the taste, decent bitterness with little in the way of the aromatics suggested in the nose. I like a substantial IPA, but this overdoes it and the malt is bland. Mediocre.

ALLOVATE (2718) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - DEC 1, 2010
Poured into a tulip it produces a sparkling orange-copper. Not much life visible, it fails to raise a head, the carbonation is minute and sparse. Relatively alluring aroma of caramelised orange and fig with a hint of caramel and Kaffir lime leaves. A little short on life in the mouth though there is harmony between the biscuity sweet malt start, tangy through to raspy hop back that drops off weedy and piney in the swallow. Light bodied, becomes oddly doughy in mouthfeel quickly yet the sprightly carbonation keeps it bouncing across the palate. Not too bad, but not exactly a mile off it’s green labelled brother IPA. An odd inclusion for these guys. Sessionable as a plus!!! (33cL, BB 29/09/11, BWS)

Pours dark amber with a quickly fading off-white head. Nose shows lots of malt with caramel, toffee and some soft citrus hops underneath. Similarly malty flavours but with a bit of orange/tangerine in there too. Pretty tasty stuff. Body feels a little light on. Not very hoppy but nice nonetheless.
