COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Australian beer drinkers, you’ve been locked up by bland, watered down lagers for too long. Never fear - the fussy bastards at Gage Roads are here to set you free! You won’t find a boring, run-of-the-mill lager here. This is a BIG Australian ale. A boatload of Aussie ingredients: 6 specialty ale malts, 4 of our finest hops. The CONVICT is rich in flavour, soaked in tropical aroma. Dry hopped with an insane amount of Summer, Stella and Galaxy hops, this in an ale that could bend even the strongest bars at Freo Prison. Break off the shackles with Gage Roads THE CONVICT Australian Strong Ale.

Pour is almost dark ruby with thin tan head. Aroma is mainly dark sugar with some tropical fruit, flavour is reminiscent of a scotch ale, lots of dark raisiny flavours that dissipates with a bitter finish that comes out once the rich malts subside. Nice, good to see some strong beers coming out in Australia that are well balanced.

Pours a clear dark bronze, almost red, color with a good tan head that fades to ample lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, roasted malt and spices. Taste of dark fruits and spices with some roasted malt. Mild bitterness and a fairly dry finish. Medium body, quite smooth and flavorful. Nice balance. Enjoyable beer and an easy drinker. Worth a try.

Clear copper with a large pale beige head that fades to a good coat. Aroma has citrus and tropical fruit poking through rather a lot of caramel. There’s lychees, oranges, passionfruit. Medium bodied, a little oily.Doesn’t feel very lively in the mouth. Moderate carbonation. Taste is not as sweet as suggested by the aroma and the bitterness is quite strong. There’s a little chocolate and coffee and the caramel melds well with the citrus flavours. The tropical fruits get a bit lost. Bitter finish with oranges is a little peppery.

DeliriumT (332) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - FEB 9, 2013
Aroma of a strong amber ale (think mountain goat triple hightail ale). The hops that the description says are used do not make a significant impression in the aroma (if it's dry hopped with a but load of galaxy, you should smell HEAPS of passionfruit). Flavour is well balanced but the strong malt again dominates. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma. I can mainly smell Passionfruit and Caramel aromas. Apperance. Pours a nice deep red colour. Taste. Flavours are pine dominated, but i can also taste caramel, liquorice, and some citrus flavours. Overall. This beer is decent, though i feel the bitterness could compliment it better then it does.

Pours a dark amber with a small head with moderate to good retention. Malt dominated aroma with some sweetness, bit of scotch, pleasant. Flavour wise this seems to sit between being an IPA and a scotch ale, too hoppy to be a scotch ale, but too sweet, scotchy and a little sour to be an IPA. Flavours meld nicely but nothing really presents itself as being outstanding. Solid beer.

640ml bottle, from dan murpheys, Aroma - hops, fresh, dark red/golden appearance, off white head.First taste - light sweetness, medium bitterness, medium sourness, salty, <- Quite an array. Complex, Great head retention, lasted till the third taste! Then fades around to the edges.medium body, average carbonation, abrupt finish, <-> As it warms the bitter lingers. Bottle did look like an exalted Emu export glass, whch is why I first walked past it.

Copper pour, the colour of one of those school fete toffees, with a very thin head. Caramel, pine and resin aroma. Toffee, citrus, pine, nice bitterness. fairly long finish, slightly syrupy. Not bad at all.

640ml bottle from Dan Murphy’s. what else would you have on Australia Day but a beer called The Convict. Bronzed copper colour that is almost red with a sprinkle of tan foam. Looks pretty good and smells even better with a load of resinous piney hop aromas. The flavour is also good with a combination of hops and caramel malt. A well crafted beer. Perfect with my roast iamb.

From a 650ml bottle on 23/1/2013. Pours a clear dark golden with a medium head which disappears quite quickly. Has some light citrus fruit aroma with some caramel in the mix as well. Flavour wise, you get some sweet orange citrus fruits (orange and mandarin) and some rye bread and nutty malt. The bitterness is relatively firm with just a touch of sourness, and lingers. I actually started to enjoy this the more it opened up. I have no idea why this has be characterised as a DIPA - it doesn’t even present as a standard IPA, but it’s a pretty good beer.
