COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Australian beer drinkers, you’ve been locked up by bland, watered down lagers for too long. Never fear - the fussy bastards at Gage Roads are here to set you free! You won’t find a boring, run-of-the-mill lager here. This is a BIG Australian ale. A boatload of Aussie ingredients: 6 specialty ale malts, 4 of our finest hops. The CONVICT is rich in flavour, soaked in tropical aroma. Dry hopped with an insane amount of Summer, Stella and Galaxy hops, this in an ale that could bend even the strongest bars at Freo Prison. Break off the shackles with Gage Roads THE CONVICT Australian Strong Ale.

From a 650ml bottle on 23/1/2013. Pours a clear dark golden with a medium head which disappears quite quickly. Has some light citrus fruit aroma with some caramel in the mix as well. Flavour wise, you get some sweet orange citrus fruits (orange and mandarin) and some rye bread and nutty malt. The bitterness is relatively firm with just a touch of sourness, and lingers. I actually started to enjoy this the more it opened up. I have no idea why this has be characterised as a DIPA - it doesn’t even present as a standard IPA, but it’s a pretty good beer.

Bottle - pours ruby with a big off white head. Deep molasses, oxo cube, veg and resin hops. Plenty if bitterness, hoppy upfront, then dry and lingering finish. Medium body creamy.

Terrific heavy ale, brilliant dark auburn colour, wonderful hops, very dry and bitter, and fantastic flavours. Really enjoy it - why limit it?! Please keep this on on the regular listing.

Bottle-caramel, toast, citrus, orange, cloudy, rocky head, very bitter, full body, average carbonation, My favourite of their range.

640ml bottle. BB 23/12/14. Poured a semi-translucent coppery brown with a 5mm beige coloured foamy head that diminished slowly and produced good filmy lacing. Subtle aroma of earthy malt and some hops – more malt than hops. Taste of soft malt up front followed by mild fruity bitterness after taste. Light body, bordering on watery. Long bitter finish. For me, average at best.

Bottle from Dan’s. Pours a cloudy amber brown with a finger of fizzy off white head. Aroma is fruity and a bit tropical with sweet orange, banana and passionfruit. As it warms there’s a great candy floss note. Slightly floral hoppiness. Very clean. Mid palate is a bit flat but the finish is very strong. Mildly bitter piney hops and some delicious biscuit.. As it warms the mid palate fleshes out with some orange peel and caramel. A pretty good effort. Much better than their usual fare. I’ll be looking forward to more like this in the future from Gage Roads.

I’ve criticized Gage Roads in the past but their latest series of beers has been very good. This has strong hop aroma and plenty of hop flavour, it is an Australian version of some of the American strong ale beers. i don’t think this quite fits the double IPA category but I don’t believe it is meant to either. Rate Beer doesn’t have a strong ale class so it has to go somewhere, judge it on its merits I say. And this beer is very good, had it a couple of time now and enjoyed it a lot on both occasions.

Bottle from Dan Murphy. Deep copper/amber, strong malt and alcohol aroma, caramel, butterscotch, mild bitterness, some spicyness in the aftertaste. Liked it.

Pours dark red-brown with a light tan collapsing head and significant carbonation. The aroma is subdued - repressed even - with little coming through except some caramel. Taste is dominated by malt up front, with some rich caramel flavours. That?s followed with some relatively mild hop bitterness. Nice spicy finish. A bit unbalanced and certainly not a double IPA (more like a pumped up ESB), but not bad.

A Solid beer this one without being one to remember. For such a ’big’ beer this was not as flavorsome as advertised. It drank more like a sweet IPA and a Double IPA.
