JorisPPattyn (6745) - Antwerpen, - MAR 27, 2005
UPDATED: MAR 28, 2005 Recipe from Louis Meulders, Belgian Eminence Grise of homebrewers, brewed in favour of vzw Natuurpunt, a Nature preservation organisation for the Kempen area, brewed at the Proef after some first tries at Achouffe Good, very white and creamy-consistence head over golden-orange beer. Spicey, peppery, perfumed nose. Obviously the Myrica Gale , but do not think of the aroma of the plant in the open - fairly different. In the taste, the bog myrtle is unmistakable - resembling the smell of the plant. Also citrus and orange zeste flavours. Light MF, very refreshing. Original, spicey beer. Well worth looking for, but difficult to obtain outside its designated area.

Tap at Hopmonk Sonoma. Light yellow pour with a small white head. Big melon nose and taste. Some spice in here too.

Sweet aroma with a little sour funk. Flavor starts sweet with some spice, almost a hint of ginger ale. Citrus and a trace of sour funk in the finish. Carbonation gives a creamy mouthfeel. I liked this better than I expected given the ratebeer rating.

Bottle from Geers. Pours dark yellow, almost orange, hazy with the yeast. Sticky retaining white head. Nose is rust/iron and when the head dies down more sweet peaches and such. Aroma is slightly clinical over syrupy grains. Flavor mostly sweet. Medium to low carbonation. Not very inspiring.

Bottle. Cloudy golden yellow, large fluffy white head. Aroma of bog myrtle. No, I’m kidding, I don’t even know what a bog myrtle is, let alone why you would put it in a beer. Anyway, this one tastes like hay with moderate spice, decent body and a bitter finish. Drinkable. Addendum: I guess bog myrtle was an ingredient of gruut, in the medieval non-hop brew. So it’s the pope’s fault that it’s in my beer :-)

This beer poured out with a tall white frothy head. Foggier then most Belgium styles I think. Rich taste and a creamy carbonation makes for a delicate palate. Good lacing around the glass the whole time. Has a strong aroma of honey suckles.

Bottle. Frothy white good fully lasting head. Moderate malty and hoppy aroma. Moderate bitter flavor. Average moderate bitter finish. No spice here. Oily palate.
