Aroma is one of beer’s most complex features. Aroma is propelled by lively CO2 and dampened by pillowy heads - especially nitrogen foam. Click on a term below to add it to your tasting notes

500ml bottle. Effectively black pour with a small, chocolate brown head. Leaves some lacing but that fades and leaves kind of an oil slick. Aroma is roast coffee and caramel. Not a very strong smell, but good. Taste is very roasty, with the coffee bitterness covering most of the sweetness. Body is thinner than I’d like, but fuller than a lot of poorer stouts so it doesn’t sit too heavy and watery. Overall, better than I was expecting.

On tap at brewpub, pours a dark black with a small brown head a d very little lace. Smell is sweet coffee and roasted malts. Taste is coffee with roasted chocolate as it gets some sweetness. Very little carbonation. Overall great taste and smell but body is too thin.

[3861-20110805] Tap. Burnt coffee grounds aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting head and lattice lacing. Roasted coffee grounds flavour has a long bitter aftertaste. Full body. (6/3/6/3/13) 3.1~

Draft at the brewpub. Served in a large stemmed glass. Pours an opaque brown color with a small tan head. Aroma of faint smoke, roasted malts, molasses, and tobacco. Flavor of burnt toast, smoked beef, coffee, dark chocolate, and tobacco. Medium-bodied, with a dry, roasty mouthfeel and mellow carbonation. Surprisingly robust roastiness to the point of near-smokiness. Quite easily my favorite beer at The Gahan House. Nice stout.

On tap @ the brewery as part of a tasting tray. Opaque black with mahogany highlights and a creamy beige head that looks nitro to me. Nice roasty aroma, notes of coffee and ash.roasty flavours along with coffee and bitter chocolate. Mouthfeel is lighter than I expected.

On tap at Gahan House brewpub, PEI. Pours out a dark brown topped with a tan head. Aroma was of roast malts, coffee, light milk chocolate sweetness, and some molasses. Taste was mostly the coffee and roast malts with some of the sweetness hanging on.

Draught @ Gahan House, Charlottetown, PE: A pitch black pour, nice nitro-like tan head. Lots of roasty malts in the aroma, some sweet molasses. Flavour is lots of molasses, sourness, anise, espresso and chocolate. All of it a bit watery but it’s a pretty good beer from a mostly questionable brewery.

Light to medium watery body. Finish goes to acrid/ acidic black patent smackdown. A bit lackluster and unbalanced. Turning?
