President Ulysses S. Grant’s (Uly to his friends) Chocolate Oatmeal Stout is what this ale is all about! As dark as the mines of Galena, this stout has a rich and creamy tanned head which leaves beautiful lacing in your glass as it is enjoyed. You will savor the profound notes of chocolate and roasted malt which dominate its flavor profile. Roasted coffee notes linger on the palate to entice the next sip!

Draught at the brewpub. Pours very dark black with small tan head. The aroma is chocolate, toast, distinct oats, Polynesian coffee, a creamy note, and a hint of caramel. The flavor is nice and roasty with some grainy oat notes, slight bitter chocolate, a bit of toast, and a deep coffee tone. Good.

Bottles picked up at the brewery. Poured near black with a moderately lasting dark beige head. The malt had the chocolate and licorice thing going on, which was pretty good. The hops were an herbal package that unfolded nicely. This was as expected for a sweet stout.

Thanks to Dembonz for bottle share. Pours a medium brown color with medium carbonation. Slight sweetness leads to a dry semi-bitter dark chocolate finish. Absolutely loved the aroma on this brew, solid stout.

12oz bottle. Brown-black body. Creamy beige head. Bigger side of medium bodied, very fresh and sessionable. Caramel, chocolate. Easy going, a touch watery, touch of roast. OK.

[Bottle] Deep brown colored pour is almost opaque. Chestnut colored foamy head. Aromas of milk chocolate, dark brown sugar, light vanilla and oats. Taste is of cocoa powder, mocha, vanilla, ash and anise. The finish seemed to hint at chicory too. Creamy texture. Fair lacing. Nicely balanced.

On tap at GTMW 2011, pours a very dark brown/black with a nice brown head, the aroma and flavor were notes of chocolate with a somewhat bitter finish, some coffee mixed in there as well, didn’t make a huge impact on me with all the other stouts I had this day.

Bottle shared by nuplastikk...thanks Greg! - Pours dark brownish black with a foamy tan head. Nose is a bit of sour milk, smooth dark malt--though not a ton of pungency in the smell. Taste is smooth and mellow with dark bread malt, prominent oatmeal, and some chocolate. Thickish with a really smooth carbonation.

On draught at the Galena Brewing Company brewpub in downtown Galena, Illinois. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with a slow dissolving beige head that leaves behind some excellent lacing. Aroma of coffee, chocolate malt, a hint of black malt, and some floral hops. Taste is medium bodied, with toasted dark malt, coffee, bakers chocolate and some grassy hops. Finish is slightly dry, some acidic aftertaste texture with a toasted dark malt aftertaste with a mild grassy hop bitterness that slowly disappears. More of a dry Irish Stout than a Sweet Stout.

On tap at the Great Taste of the Midwest. The aroma touches on chocolate and coffee but not much else. Mildly chocolate and coffee flavor, mixed with water and seltzer. Meh.
