3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 drywallman (292) - Lake in the Hills, USA - DEC 19, 2011
Bottles picked up at the brewery. Poured near black with a moderately lasting dark beige head. The malt had the chocolate and licorice thing going on, which was pretty good. The hops were an herbal package that unfolded nicely. This was as expected for a sweet stout.

Thanks to Dembonz for bottle share. Pours a medium brown color with medium carbonation. Slight sweetness leads to a dry semi-bitter dark chocolate finish. Absolutely loved the aroma on this brew, solid stout.

Nearly opaque. Nice head. Nice lacing. Nice bitter toasted malt flavors. A very good stout.

On tap at the Great Taste of the Midwest. The aroma touches on chocolate and coffee but not much else. Mildly chocolate and coffee flavor, mixed with water and seltzer. Meh.

Fresh on tap today at the brewery.
Review from written notes, scoring to style...
Jet black body, dark mocha tinged foam that sticks at the edges and leaves a little bit of spotty lacing. Retention is pretty good, the initial finger of foam slowly settled and faded to a sticky ring around the edges.
Mellow roasty nose, dry bakers chocolate, dark roast coffee. Not harsh, mellow and aromatic. Lightly bitter, dry and roasty, supple creamy feel, fairly light bodied. Hits all the signature notes with coffee, unsweetened bitter dark chocolate, cream. Very flavorful and easy to drink, something i’d order another pint of for sure. Bottled version seemed to have more carbonation.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 tmoreau (1355) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - OCT 20, 2011
Poured from a gift growler from neighbors who very recently visited the brewery. Displayed a black/brown hue with lighter, brownish tan, billowly head foam on top of darker bubbles, and curtainy webbing as lacing. The aroma was very roasty, with baker’s chocolate, espresso, a touch of smoke, and hints of caramel and molasses. The flavor offered smooth malt, a touch of woodiness, and low hop bitterness at the back in this "a bit heftier than medium" bodied brew.. Low carbonation was not a deterring factor. There was a light creaminess to the mouthfeel, and a pleasant dryness to the finish. Good complexity, and very quaffable.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20 fidelis83 (1354) - Clinton, Iowa, USA - OCT 11, 2011
Pours a nearly black dark brown with a 1-2 finger tan head that has great retention, and leaves really nice looking lacing. Aroma is chocolate, roast nuts, light coffee, dark caramel, a hint of sweetness, possibly lactose, light spicy and citrus hops. Flavor is coffee and chocolate right away, roasted nuts, slightly over cooked granola, roast malt, a hint of char, light smoke, milky sweetness, burnt sugar and bitter hops to finish. Palate is light to medium bodied, creamy on entry and has a moderately effervescent, but very sharp feeling carbonation, almost feels a bit acidic, finishes slightly creamy. This was a highly enjoyable stout, it would definitely score a little higher if it weren’t for the overly sharp carbonation.

Thirsty Troll Beer Fest. Pour is deep brown/black with a tan head. Aroma shows chocolate, oats, and moderate roast. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of caramel, coffee, and a touch of vanilla creme. Overall
body is moderate, soft, and finishes with some roasted bitterness.

Draught at the brewpub. Pours very dark black with small tan head. The aroma is chocolate, toast, distinct oats, Polynesian coffee, a creamy note, and a hint of caramel. The flavor is nice and roasty with some grainy oat notes, slight bitter chocolate, a bit of toast, and a deep coffee tone. Good.

On tap at GTMW 2011, pours a very dark brown/black with a nice brown head, the aroma and flavor were notes of chocolate with a somewhat bitter finish, some coffee mixed in there as well, didn’t make a huge impact on me with all the other stouts I had this day.
