Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned (mainly for export). Canned version is pasteurised and listed separately.
History : Horndean Special Bitter (HSB) was first brewed in 1959 to meet a growing demand for a higher strength bitter. Sales growth was slow throughout the sixties when BBB and the cask milds were the predominant Gales beers. However, following the creation of CAMRA and the greater public interest in cask conditioned beer, HSB sales grew throughout the seventies and eighties and became Gales major brand. Production moved to Fullers in early 2006.

This is a very old school beer, but not really in a good way. Aroma is very malty and rather stale, dark amber appearance, the palate is malty but undistinguished, dry malty finish. Some may like this traditional bitter, but brewing in this country has moved on a lot since its heyday, not enough craft or flavour for me.

Cask at the GBBF 2015. High fluffy lasting white head. Clear very dark brown body. Sweet mild dried dark fruit aroma. Mild coffee notes on top of dried dark fruits. Fair amount of hops bitterness. Low carbonation, long bitter and dry finish. Impressive.

On tap at the Ship in Wokingham. Dark brown with an ok head. Dry and malty but a bit bland. Not Fullers’ finest hour, though hardly a travesty.

Cask. Deep copper in color, off-white head. Mild nuttyness, biscuits and grainy notes in aroma. Smooth, almost velvety mouthfeel. Gentle bitterness, hints of chocolate and nutty notes. Excellent one with a superb drinkability, very well balanced as well.

Cask at the parcel yard, London. Pours clear copper, bubbly white head. Aromas of biscuit and light spice. Taste is dried fruit, orange, more light spice. Medium body, clean finish. Best so far!
