COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned (mainly for export). Canned version is pasteurised and listed separately.
History : Horndean Special Bitter (HSB) was first brewed in 1959 to meet a growing demand for a higher strength bitter. Sales growth was slow throughout the sixties when BBB and the cask milds were the predominant Gales beers. However, following the creation of CAMRA and the greater public interest in cask conditioned beer, HSB sales grew throughout the seventies and eighties and became Gales major brand. Production moved to Fullers in early 2006.

Hand pulled at JD Wetherspoon, Paradise Forum, Birmingham. A big powerful one. Orangey brown, with a nice beige head. Strong brandy flavour, with a crusty peppery finish that lingers in a tangy way. Slightly harsh big malt flavour. Very heavy for the ABV; I can’t quite make my mind up on this one, but on balance it’s probably too much for my tastes.

Drank at a pub based beer festival in Shropshire 14th Sept 2007(gravity poured pint). Great dark colour, ruby red and clear, firm biege head that stayed the distance. Fruity, hoppy and interesting aroma. The fruitiness within the fullbodied taste gives this beer a wonderful flavour. The taste clings to your palat, this is a good beer. Glad I re-introduced myself to it, I won’t wait so long between visits again.

Cask @ O’Hara’s Freehouse. Rated on 07.03.2011
Aroma has bready malt, some hay and hints of toffee. Flavour has toffee, bready malt, some biscuits and hay. Decent, but kind of flat, boring and easy to forget.

Cask in the Holly Bush NW3. A very dark coloured ale with hint of ruby. Roasty malted smell, taste is quite full and complex with malt, fruit cake but also a herbal bitterness in the finish. Drinks well for strength - had a few of these and noticed it this morning! A good wintry ale.

0,5 l bottle as a gift.
Poured clear brown some copper/reddish tones, nice foamy off white head. Toasted caramel and nut, light hoppy aroma, malt and some fruits in the nose. Medium bodied one with a fruity flavor, caramel and hoppy bit on the tongue. Herbal bitterness in the finish. Not bad, not exciting, very drinkable.

First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in August 1994. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear dark amber in colour with russet highlights and a creamy thick head. Strong ovaltine aroma with yeasty bread notes. Thick creamy mouthfeel and superb lacing. Pale malt complex gives a rich maltloaf base with juicy raisins and caramel flavours. Hop resins give a earthy flavour with citric overtones in the smooth aftertaste. Finish is malty and robust with maple syrup, thick cut marmalade and soft brown sugar. An excellent ESB and ideal for a session.
