No carbonation, no head, cloudy dull brown colour. Plum/raisin/sider aroma, quite sweet. Flavours much the same, cloying, alcohol bite - virtually undrinkable. Must have been a dodgy bottle, looking at the rest of the ratings...

wow, i really liked this, one of the few beers that i feel is underated. Got this today at Downeast Beverage Co. pours a thik murky brown, with lots of sediment. poured in alot of the yeast, Wups! Had this at cellar temp. aroma is very earthy, with strong caramel, oak, and brown sugar. taste is of caramel, molasas, spice, and some nutty, woodsy type flavors. very strong, this is just as much like a wine as it is a beer, the perfect example of a sipping beer. strong alcohol presence in the aroma and taste, warms you up nice!

Smell and taste of burnt rotten apples.Zero head or carbonation. Try Lees or Hardys instead.Gets my vote as the worst barley wine ever. Glad its retired,it will save at lot of agony.

Very little aroma to speak of. Dry, some malt and woody notes. Color is light brown. Carbonation is very light, almost no head to speak of. Small wispy bubbles form around outside ring of beer to glass and hold for the duration. So far, I’m not too impressed with the aromas or visuals of this beer, than I take a sip....and am almost knocked out of my chair. This beer has a huge body and thick mouthfeel that belies the visual impression. Malts, sweet roasted stone fruits, such as figs, raisins and prunes. Port wine and treacle. Very little hops to speak of. Alcohol warms in the finish. Gets to be a bit cloying towards the bottom of the glass, but I can forgive that because of all the rest of the stellar atributes this beer has in the taste. This has been cellaring for about 2 years now and has aged well.

well.. To be honest I am scared to drink this one. It does look very weird in the class and with the research I have done this beer is 7 years old.... Smells musty and high in alcohol, some earth tones and wood. Pours a very hazy and cloudy and chunky pale brown with no head at all. Has a funny light body with no carbonation. Taste like MRs. Dash seasoning salt. this is like a a ranch dip packet. I find this hard to believe that this was beer at one time.. WOW.... .it might be drain poor.. "

Would have rated overall impression higher but it’s kicking my ass right now. Very strong aroma, overripe fruity flavor. Complex and heavy.

Kind of reminds me of Sam Adams Trippel Bock...bordering on a port like brew. I favour it because it does push the border for Barley Wine style ales. But...if it comes across as too much for your palate to appreciate....I can understand that.

Bottle. No head. Colour like polished amber. Smells and tastes like port wine, but with a nice long aftertaste of malt and fruit (plums?). Unable to taste the 12%. Very interesting - one of my first barley wines - won’t be the last.
