Grapes dominate the aroma here, with a touch of alcohol at first. Coupled with the very silky flat palate, this seemed more like a wine than a beer. Flavor was thinner up front, most of the action was at the end - sweet malts, grape skins, a little alcohol. Exceptional.

Bottle. Slightly murky reddish orange pour, zero head. Nose is soy, molasses, dark fruit, and wood. Palate is moderate and a bit flat. Taste is very complex - soy sauce with some spice (reminds me of dipping sushi in a wasabi-loaded soy sauce tray), woody elements, and a healthy dose of red wine character. Interesting and tasty.

THX Ungstrup. Pours a hazy brown with no head. Sweet with lots of rye bread and øllebrød. Lots of alcohol notes and residual sugars. Bready. Medium to full bodied. No carbonation.

Bottled, 275ml cork & foiled, from Geoff & Janet Day (Those were the Days!). Copper, amber with no head. Massive alcohol, whisky aroma leading straight into the flavour. So much alcohol it’s hard to get anything else other than a touch of tartish oxidation, and I know where this has been kept for the last 10 years. Some fruit, raisins, sultanas with a Belgian yeasty note, but overall this is pure Barley Wine, not a favourite but glad I tried it. Must get this years version.

I struggled to want to drink this, but there was a reason that an almost 10 year old beer is available for $3.45. Smells pretty good, more like a wine than an beer. Very dark burgundy color. Tastes strikingly sour and intensely sweet with a lingering cork/barrel flavor. Flavors of wine, tannins, and raisins.

Sample from 33 cl. bottle. 2002 Vintage. Courtesy of Ungstrup. Clear, brown colour with no head. Strong, sweet aroma with light notes of ripe fruits. Full bodied. No carbonation. Finish is sweet and lasting - coffee, chocolate, toffee and light caramel. An old beer still with some enjoyment.

Hazy brown with a small off-white head. A rather oxidized aroma with nice nuances of dried fruit, mint and spices. Dry and malty flavour with fruity notes, and again, rather oxidized
