COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle Conditioned. 275ml bottle. Corked.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and minute amounts of black malt and brewing sugar; Fuggles, Goldings and Challenger.
Matured for 12 months in wooden casks.
It is reddish in color with hops and apple fruit on the nose, spicy and malty in the mouth, and a dry, even tart fruity finish with hints of raisins and apple.
The slow work of the yeast in the bottle may increase the alcohol content to 12% or even more. After several years of aging Prize Old Ale gains a more complex palate with Calvados like character. It is said that Prize Old Ale is at its best after 20 years of maturing.
Bottled as Milestones Pale Ale to celebrate the opening of the Milestones Museum.

Sweet caramel scent. Hazy red shade, almost no head. Wow, port, strong fruit-cake flavour, raisins especially. Warm from beginning to end. Takes on a wine like feel. Superb.

I had the 1997 bottle. Very complex and not for the faint of heart. Vinous, with notes of chocalate. My guess is you’ll either love it or hate it. But it is, without question, one of the great beers of England. Wine lovers will flip for this beer!!

1999 bottle. I bought it on ’special’ for $1.49. Should have known better. Spoiled. Would like to try some that has been well taken care of.

UPDATED: DEC 4, 2005 Full,... Very Full! I liked it a lot. Want to age some,... re-rate in a couple. 6,4,8,4,16 re-rate 12-4-05: A ’96 bottling. WOOHOO! So there is nothing left in this bottle as far as life goes. This is dead. Pours a syrupy deep brown with no CO2. Aroma is a beautiful mix of horse blanket and vanilla with a big wallop of gracefully aged sherry. The body is lifeless and syrupy. Acidity is at a very high level in this bottle and it does take away some of the maltiness that the beer did once have but has been striped of. No hops alcohol is very diminished and the overall experience is much like sipping a fine prot, which I guess is the goal. Nice beer but I would like to try one that is carbonated.

Not the standout beer that I was hoping for after a great day of surfing. Murky brown appearence with virtually no head. The aroma is intensely vinous. Almost lambic like witha sour cherry nose. The beer is thin bodied and feels flat and oily on the palate. The flavour is interesting, reminding me of a lambic. I would like more hops, carbonation, and body for the style, so I was not too impressed with this beer.

My bottle was 1996. I have been sitting on this beer for a while, and I finally opened it. It is a fairly complex beer with multiple flavors going on including bitter apples. I really liked this strong ale dispite others ratings. Hey, if you are buying beer that is corked (wine style), you better be expecting a beer with very little carbonation (or the cork would blow), and therefore head retention would also be altered, but hey, I like this beer. Cheers!

Chestnut brown in color with mild hop bitterness. Very, perhaps even an overly oaky taste. Also a very winelike on the palate. Not very impressive.

UPDATED: JAN 17, 2004 Headless. Funky aromas of butterscotch, caramel, wine casks, and seaweed. Fruity and lightly nutty throughout. Very mellow.

Heavily vinous nose and initially a very vinous flavor. But on further drinking, it has a wonderfully complicated, rich flavor. There’s a slightly sweet malty bottom, with woody esters, and notes of chocolate and cherries milling about on the palate. Very good.
