3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jpfrog (130) - Bellingham, Washington, USA - FEB 12, 2003UPDATED: MAR 3, 2003 2001 Bottle: Great sour malt nose. No head whatsoever. Some chocolate covered cherry smell as well. Tastes like a glass of wine. It warms you as it goes down. Maybe I opened it too soon. I suppose I should have aged it a couple of years. No hops at all in this beer, or at least I can't taste them. A good and interesting beer, I have never had anything quite like it. No carbonation either.

From memory: I’ve had about a dozen of these and 2 or 3 were flat or outright spoiled. The remaining ones were very good
Pours brown. Littke or no head. Some yeast chunks. Smells of maple syrup, sherry, fruit and malt. Complex taste also includes some sourness. Quite a unique beer.

275 ml bottle from 2001 sampled in 2006. Beautiful almost clear copper red body with a small tan head. Vinous aroma with dry fruit, slightly acidic berries, oak and noble caramel. Flavor is sweet, smooth malty, dry fruit, acidic berries, wood and pleasant oxidized old sherry. Fine body and wonderful aftertaste. A classic made for sipping.
2.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 10/20 BeerGuyTWMore (126) - Florida, USA - APR 16, 2013
1997-pours opaque (but watery) brown, no head, fizz, or even bubble...pours like water. Aroma was pretty impressive with raisin, molasses, chocolate, and dusty yeast ester - brandy esque. Flavor is nothing but cardboard, and while this was expected to an extent, I wish some of the aroma came through on the palate.

Bottle from Blue Max - 2003 vintage. Beer has gone flat - just really empty on the tongue. Nice aroma of dark fruit and wood. Taste is similar but it just tastes too darn old.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 burg326 (2327) - Florida, USA - MAR 15, 2013
1997 bottle poured a cloudy brown color with aromas of funk, stale bread and some dark fruit. Flavors are the same with some extra oxidation. Not the worst beer around but certianly not the best.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 portableparty (1598) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - MAR 4, 2013
Bottle 1996 #6042. Pours calm brown black with emptiness. Aroma has a strange mint chocolate scent. Taste is mild licorice mint and chocolate and old stale anise tartness. Palate is full and watery? Old beer.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 dnstone (1986) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - MAR 2, 2013
Pours a murky brown color with no head at all. Aroma is definitely barleywine-esque; sweet malty syrupy but with a definite musty overtone from the age. No carbonation remains...flavor is malty sweet, almost chocolatey and caramel with some apple notes...the age definitely adds some edges that approach tart but I think we opened this bottle just in time before it turned. Overall I am quite impressed by how it held up to the years!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 banii (111) - Trondheim, NORWAY - MAR 1, 2013

Over toppen...

1997 Vintage. tulip. amber color with cloudy body can’t really see through. Smell is more in the fruit side, dark fruits such as grapes, prunes. The taste reflects a lot the smell, mild sweet and easy to drink.
