COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle Conditioned. 275ml bottle. Corked.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and minute amounts of black malt and brewing sugar; Fuggles, Goldings and Challenger.
Matured for 12 months in wooden casks.
It is reddish in color with hops and apple fruit on the nose, spicy and malty in the mouth, and a dry, even tart fruity finish with hints of raisins and apple.
The slow work of the yeast in the bottle may increase the alcohol content to 12% or even more. After several years of aging Prize Old Ale gains a more complex palate with Calvados like character. It is said that Prize Old Ale is at its best after 20 years of maturing.
Bottled as Milestones Pale Ale to celebrate the opening of the Milestones Museum.

A ’97 vintage. bought @ McScrooges - I’m an idiot. Figured either be a great surprise or an awful letdown.... awful. Stored improperly no doubt for years, soured as vinegar with no, absolutely no carbonation. The vinious notes of an old ale are there cloaked by overwhelming sadness of a beer past her prime. The sadest thing is I’m sure this was a wonderful beer, and no doubt would have BEEN a better beer in the future, if only it had been stored properly. Bummer.

Bottle courtesy of Lunch. Served in a SAVOR snifter. Pours a very dark brown color with no head really at all. Thin, thin collar without much going on. The nose carries some cardboard and a bit of booze. Sweetness as well. Plenty of malt. Flavor has loads of wet cardboard and booze. Some malt sweetness. Medium, flat body. Meh.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2012 2000 vintage from Bottle Works in Seattle. Poured into a snifter glass. Well, I decided to give this one a try and I’ll just say that its as I hoped. Heard a little hiss when I opened it and it had maybe a half finger of head. Cork came off without any problems although had a tiny bit if mold on the outside. Color is reddish brown. Aroma is slightly lactic. Taste is prunes, yeast... Some lambic type tartness and maybe saison farmhouse. Medium body, a bit on the thinner side from what I expected. Bottle had black yeast layer stuck to bottom. A bit of yeasty trub on the last bit of the pour. Anyhow, good experience and worth the seven bucks or so I paid! Looking forward to tracking this down again!

I felt like this beer was quite unique. The first thing I noticed was the rich oil-like (in a good way) palate, which went went well with the strong aroma and surprisingly palatable taste. This was exquisite.

2002 bottle. Dark colour, slightly copper colour, but mostly black like cola. Very aromatic - sweet dark fruits, prunes, molasses, malt. Taste is also quite sweet, very flat. Smooth on the palate, barely detectible abv. Interesting style.

2002 bottle thanks to drowland! Pours a muddy orange with no head to speak of. Nose is caramel, butterscotch and lactic sourness. Flavor...well I can barely get this down. Woof. 2002 was not a good year.

1/4/12. 2002 bottle thanks to Blazer06! Murky red/brown pour with basically no head. Huge old ale aroma here, tons of dark caramel, molasses, brown sugar, and dark fruits. Also a bit of minty/papery oxidation. Whoooooa, not as solid flavor. Tart, dark fruits, oxidation, pepper, raisins, and... phew buddy. Very interesting for sure.

2003 Vintage. Weird. This beer had absolutely no carbonation. Bad bottle? The aroma is dark fruit like plums and grapes. Some spice and barnyard funk. The appearance is a pretty red brown, but there is no head. The taste falls from the aroma. The dark fruits are featured as a winey taste, but no spice is present. For a 9% beer there is little alcohol if any in either taste or warming. The body is medium to heavy, but without any carbonation it is hard to judge the palate and mouthfeel. Overall, very strange. Some good flavors but needs work in the mouthfeel. I think I may have gotten an odd or off bottle. I’ll try again another time a re-judge.
