MrBunn (802), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 28, 2008 Bottle (2005 vintage). Getting the plastic off the cap area proved to be the first major hurdle... then realizing that I didn’t have a cork screw on me... the things I don’t do for this "hobby." As I finally wear down the bottles resistance, I find a murky brown with a bit of fizzy carbonation and dank and sour aromas. At this point I’m wondering if it will be more like a sour or an old ale. After first sip, I have to say that this is a rather unique ale. Flavors swirl back and forth between sweet and stickymalts and sour apples and acidic vinegar. Interesting, but I’m not sold.
BMan1113VR (669), Los Angeles (and Dallas, TX), California, USA Jul 25, 2008 2002 bottle that might have been past its prime. Pours with no head, but a couple of bubbles covering a slightly hazy deep-red body. Aroma of currants and oxidation. Taste is thin oxidized, starting off with a very off note, and then finishing fruity and a bit spicey. Syrupy, but too thin. Alldaydrinker (450), Norwood, Massachusetts, USA Jul 14, 2008 1996 Vintage 9.3 oz Bottle. Pours a murky red hued brown color with no head or visible carbonation. Nose of caramel, fig, grape skins, plum, dark cherry, earthiness and good solid alcohol background characters. Mouthfeel is silky, smooth with a medium syrupy texture. Initiall taste of caramel, fig, plum and raisans. Mid palate displays more of alcohol characteristics, wet hay and cherry come through. Finishing sharp and vinous with a good caramel duration. Palate duration is above average. Medium body. Alcohol is well balanced for this brew. Very drinkable. jjpm74 (2760), Connecticut, USA Jul 8, 2008 Old bottle from when Gales was still in business. Pours ruby red with no head to speak of. Smells fruity with some caramel and citrussy elements. Tastes earthy and tarte with a port wine finish. Enjoyable. SETANTA (555), Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 2, 2008 1997 Vintage at Ebenezer Kerzars of Lovell, ME... Reddish copper color, viscous enough that it stick way up on the glass... sherry-like, extremely sweet and raisiny, but in a good way. Hop bitterness attempts to balance it out, but flavors are overwhelmed by the malt sweetness. azlondon (463), Greater London, England Jun 30, 2008 Appearance: Dark brown, bit of red. Cloudy. Bit of shortlived head.
