3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 24, 2012
Brown 500ml bottle (4.2% ABV), best before 18th May 2010, drank and reviewed on 26th Feb 2010. Poured into my ’Old Speckled Hen’ vase shapped pint glass.
Light copper, thin amber colour, clear and lively. On top sat very little, an off-white head appeared as i poured, but before I’d had a sip it had turned into a patchy wisp and collar.
Typical English Bitter aroma of hops and malts, never too strong, never too weak (hopefully). This one has an added fruitiness to the normal smells.
Mid-range in the bitter/hop stakes, this is easy drinking and pleasant from the first sip to the last gulp. A hint of caramel sweetness comes into play at the begining of the flavour, but this dies away as the mouth searches for the hops and bitterness that it is expecting. A very good session beer, never seen it in cask form though, I’ll certainly try it if I do.
The body is fairly robust for a 4.2% brew, all in all, not bad!
