2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: MAY 16, 2011 Let’s take a trip to Guatemala. This 12 oz twist off cap bottle has been layen around a while ~ date code is 1896. Smell is a little like cabbage related vegetables. Aroma is more clean once it is poured, more lemony yeast like. It looks quite bright yellow in my glass with some internal bubbling. No head, just a belt around the inside of the glass. Very good carbonation on the palate from front to back of throat. Taste is a little ungentle manlike, lacking manners. Sharp medium bitterness with the initial taste then that fades rapidly, it does not linger. Overall, this is not too bad but has some forward tastes. It is repeatable and almost session like. There are other good lagers out there with more manners and lower price. Carlsburg is much better than this for about the same price. Rolling Rock, Schmidt’s and Miller Highlife excel when tastes are compared.

2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle... AWOL ’07... Clear light yellow lager with a mid-sized, fizzy, white head. Honey and grain aroma. Mostly sweet flavor with a restrained hop snap. Medium-bodied with average carbonation. Lightly sweet finish with only a hint of peppery hop bitterness. I found the beer to be a pretty good example of a pretty mundane style. Much better than anticipated.

1.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottle. Pale Lager, watery, bland, and not a lot of carbonation to note. Sweetish malts, with a little hop bitterness.

Blech...foul composty aroma. Cornish crap-like taste. But hey, when’s the next time I’m going to have a beer from Guatemala?

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottled. Very bland with a strong astringent finish. I couldn’t help it but think that I was drinking straight-up alcohol. Next...

1.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20
Poured water to gold in color with thin white head. The aroma comes off as grainy and with hints of metal. The flavor is standard sweet malts with hints of hop bitterness and metal shavings. Not such a great beer.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
On tap: In Guatemala this is called "Gallo" on the labels, billboards, etc. Pours a clear golden color with a frothy off-white head that is mostly lasting and lively. Has a sweet corn aroma and corn flavor on a thin palate. Not bad and drinkable. Less waterey that Bud or Miller products.

Ehhh, not so good. Taste like butter and not much else. Maybe I’ll try the other one somebody gave me but I doubt my rating will change much.

2.3 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Pale yellow with mild carbonation. A persistent white head laces nicely. Mild hops attempt to save a sad & sickly uric aroma with metallic tendencies. (Some people like to joke about how pale lagers smell like urine, but I’m being serious here.) Flavor is all background noise: sweet pale malts, light herbal bitters and a lick of metal do nothing to get a rise out of me. Inoffensive yet bland.
Even though Famosa ranks lower overall, I’m standing by my conviction to avoid <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/bahia/10539/> and will instead attempt to sample various and sundry other Guatemalan lagers, good and bad.

Drinkable but forgetable. Holds a good head on a pale yellow liquid. Barnyard hay aroma. Syrupy and bland with some hops trying to cry out for attention.
