Note this is a genuine Gallo bought in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Pours a golden pale color with less than one finger head thatquickly dissipates and shows plenty of carbonation. Toasted hops and mild sweetness up front. Largely no hop flavor. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Medium malty finish. For a macrobrew lager, this one is good compared to many of the other Central American lagers I’ve had and even some of the macrobrews in the US.

350ml bottle in Guatemala. Pours a very bright, clear yellow with little to no head. Aroma is of grassy, skunky hops. Taste actually isn’t too bad, if a little sweet for my liking. When I say not too bad, I mean for a tasteless lager to be enjoyed ice cold on the beach.

Pours a clear, golden color topped with average white frothy head. There is a mild malty aroma, some gains. The taste is light, sweet, slightly watery with little bitterness in the end. Just your typical lager. Nothing special, but nice when ice cold.

A pale blonde lager with a thick collapsing white head. In aroma, light grassy malt with faint sulfur notes, light mineral notes, boring. In mouth, a nice crisp grassy malt with faint German hops, light sulfur, OK. Did not mind this one. Bottle from Auto Mercado San Jose.

Docked at Puerto Quetzal on 27th March 2014: not much actually at the ’Cruise Terminal’ bar wise (apart from a canopy covered area with three fridges and some tables and chairs, we wished we’d stayed there to be honest: we did have three more different bottles there later). Got taken to a black sandy beach bar somewhere in/near San Jose and that is where I got a five bottle bucket of ’Gallo Q7’. Bog standard International lager, grainy, refreshing (it was a hot, sunny day) but nothing to stand it apart from so many other in this style. It was the best of the four Guatemalan beers I got to try, sadly that is not saying much!

UPDATED: APR 28, 2014 12 oz can labeled as Famosa. Poured a hideous clear straw yellow with a white top that instantly vanished. Taste of old grains, skunk, and just all around awful. Surprisingly high carbonation, thin boring body. I’d rather have a steel reserve any day, and that’s saying a lot.

Light yellow color. No head retention. Tastes of cheap corn and alcohol. But its fizzy and cold.. That’s about all thats good.
