Brown ale is a genre I don’t get. It’s like everyone wants to pretend Newcastle doesn’t exist but they all pretty much end up tasting like good or bad copies of Newcastle. Brown pour with a slight hint of lacing. Tastes 60% like Newcastle except fresher. Finishes clean. Yawn!
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Nate (3093) - Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 26, 2011
On tap at The Gamble Mill. Roasted grain and barley with light coffee aroma. Mild fruity character. Can’t smell hops, though. Coppery brown clear with thin, off-white head. Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Starts dry and nutty with roasted barley, dry spicy hop character. Light coffee and chocolate. Bitter finish and after. Nutty, light and chalky.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 dpjuart (900) - Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 19, 2011
Sample at brewpub. Pours brown/red with eggshell head. Chocolate, roast, and brown sugar. Tastes lime a porter. Sweet brow sugar, astringent roast, bitter. Not too terribly bad.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 auerbrau (2666) - Peace Dale, Rhode Island, USA - FEB 9, 2011
On tap at the brewpub. Noses in a nice deep caramelized malt sugar. Pours dark-mid brown, with creamy head. I thought this had above average complexity, with some roast notes from the chocolate malts adding an almost smokey complexity to the beer. This definitely wasn’t your average boring brown, but instead brought a solid suite of well developed malt flavors and a nice spicy hop kick at the end. Next to the pale ale, one of the most enjoyable beers.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 FROTHINGSLOSH (3388) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 18, 2010
UPDATED: JAN 2, 2011 Sampled on draft at the brewery this beer poured a dark brown color with a small tan head that lingered and produced good lacing. The aroma was dry, roasty and had light coffe and fruit. The flavofr was bitter, dryish and roasty with light notges of smoke, caramel, dark fruits and wood. Medium length finish. Medium body. Drier than I tend to care for but decent.
