4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft in Strassgiech (and again at the beer fest in Nuernberg).
Head is initially average sized, frothy, mostly lasting.
Body is light amber.
Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel, toasted grain), moderately hoppy (apricot, flowers), with notes of dried mango/papaya.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, silky texture, soft carbonation.
As usual, Andy’s beer transcends description...I noticed today that my feeble notes can’t really articulate this, and that’s been true of his other brews. Having one of his beers in your hand is like being a deer caught in headlights...it’s so mesmerizing that you can’t really put thoughts into words. Drank many half-liters of this at both the Zoiglstube and at the beer fest in Nuernberg and it’s about as life-affirming and blissful as beer can get.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JUL 19, 2013 Tap at the brewpub, dark amber and very hazy with a clingy thin white head. Malty nose with a hint of orange. Solid malty body, bitter with fruity overtones - orange marmalade and toasted caramel. Re-rate at Störenkeller, Bamberg, a lot spicier, with notes of cloves and cardamom, orangey body is still there but lurking beneath a Saison-like overlay. Still very good, but rather different.

Draught at Gallow’s Bird, Espoo. Poured clear copper in color with a creamy, small white head. Nutty and bready malty on the nose. Flavour quite similar. Slightly dry, semidark bread in aftertaste. A bit of disturbing vegetables in taste also.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draught, Oct. 2009 at Brauerei Beck Trabelsdorf: Misty straw-peach hue. Creamy clumps of pasty white foam comprise the head. Dusty yeast bites the nose, with a tantalizing blend of spicy, herbal hops showcasing aniseed and black pepper. Sulfur is vague enough to the point of being pleasant and creating characterful charm. Soft, fluffy and dense carbonation. Zippy hops unleash a coarse lemon-zest bitterness as deep-rooted toasted malt lends hearty crunchiness. Yeast imparts texture and also a bit of toasted dough which brilliantly echoes the honeyish sweetness. Hops are dripping with succulent nuance. Malt exemplifies remarkable depth with a honey-drizzled cakelike heft and a cookieish snap. Superb balance. Yeast coats and layers the tongue with a dusty residue while the malt continues to dish pout more dextrinous weight. Divine fusion of lemon, minerals, and honeydew lend an uplifting quality and greatly enhance drinkability. Finishes crisply with leafy, herbaceous hops along with an accompaniment of deeply complex toasty, nutty, cakey, honeyish malt and doughy yeast muscle. The balance and complexity here, coupled with the dizzying array of nuances, is unparalleled. A very special experience was this.
