Draught@HBF. Slightly hazy amber color, small white head. Very meaty, red meat, smoked aroma. Cheesy even. Medium-bodied. Smoked ham, smoked cheese in the aftertaste! Very unique rauchbier.

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2013 Draught at Zoiglstube in May, 2013 (and from a tragically infected keg at the Fränkisches Bierfest in Nürnberg): Hazy orange. Dense crown of sticky meringue foam. Melanoidin- and marmalade-laden aromas, with divine complementary notes of sherbet, manure, smoked hay, fresh baked shortbread, lemon zest, fresh-cut wood, pineapple upside-down cake, minerals. Remarkably soft and fine carbonation. Zesty and luscious marmalade flavors collide with a forceful Spalt charge which drips and oozes with bright, palate-coating, sweetish nectar. Stacks upon stacks of bouncy, adeptly extracted, melanoidin-rich malt follows up with a luxuriously textured complexity which caresses the palate with decadent poundcake and cookie accents. Endlessly complex and edgeless maltiness continually unfolds with a hay dust and toasted breadcrust interplay. Melanoidins are quite candyish and give a liquefied black licorice suggestion. Smoke character brims with intriguing manure and road tar, which lends an appealing and decidedly rustic quality. Profoundly pure and malt-centric, with no meat flavors to speak of. Dab of marzipan and even some mild fudge sneaks in from the staggeringly complex rauch character. Tobacco spice ensues as the spicy-hop intensity crescendos in its peppery bitterness. Radiant peach gels with a floral dried-apricot subtleness. Considerably dry, squeaky clean finish displays oodles of spicy, woody hops along with a hint of kumquat marmalade dusted with black pepper and springy tobacco. Almost invariably, brewers sacrifice cleanliness for brutish complexity. But of course a masterful brewer can brew something unprecedented in its complexity with equally matched nuances as well as textural depth and refinement, as is the case here. This beer, and more than a few of Andy’s beers, are a distillation of life. It’s uncanny. If a brewer could somehow find a way to cheat, I would accuse him of doing so. But after many tastes of his exquisite beers over the past five years or so, I am convinced that there is nothing like these creations, at least within this Earthly realm.

Lightly hazed amber with a rocky off-white head. Immensely deep aroma, nearly as stunning as that first smell of Affumicator: red apples, cedar, peppered meat, a little ashy, sweet and fruity, burnt candied apples or something. Chewy, sweet toffee malts and cherry and plum flavored malt sugars. Clean fermentation. Creamy carbonation. Ebbing and flowing and swelling aroma. So it was in fantastic shape from one keg, and from another at the bierfest it was crunchy, sourish and acidic. Damn shame if anyone got a first impression of this beer from that one keg. This is a beauty when it’s in good shape.

Draught@HBF2013. Amber colour, small white head. Aroma is smoke, tar, toffee, grass and mild wooden and resiny notes. Flavour is fruity, wooden, toffeeish with some herbal notes and just some mild burnt wet wooden notes.

05/06/2013 Ma che siete venuti a fà (tap). Ambrata spenta, leggermente torbida, schiuma bianco sporca discreta, non molto persistente. Al naso sentori di malto, caramello, bacon. In bocca è equilibrata ma un po’ spenta, caramello, affumicato, qualche nota di pane. Corpo medio, carbonazione soft. Forse non al meglio, comunque discreta.

Lovely smoky aroma. Classic in the style, just like Heller’s Marzen. However, it’s simpler in the taste, a bit watery. Nice,and very drinkable, but a little bit disappointing given the wonderful aroma.

(Draught at HBF2013) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had smoke, smoked meat, smoked cheese and grilled sausage. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were smoke, smoked ham, grilled sausage, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was smoky. A very smoky and meaty brew.

Draught @ HBF2013. Pours an amber colour with a white head. Aroma of tar, smoked ham, grass and bread. Flavour of sweet malts, smoked ham, wood, bread and meat. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and a malty smoked finish. Rather unique.
