330 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ Kaapse brouwers. Brewed on 02/11/2012 if I understand the label correctly? Green bottle. Light copper amber hued very dark brown, blackish beer, little in the way of head. Very intensely umami nose, big soy sauce, liquorish, some DE-style fish guts, some medicinal herbs, medicinal quality, thick liquorish & soy sauce syrup, some faint molasses even,… Taste is heavily umami still with big liquorish presence but with some new elements than what I got in the nose, Christmas spices, deep dark Christmas pudding, lightly medicinal, umami, molasses, some bitterness buried in there as well, light herbal & even faint fruity hops, some medicinal quality & bitterness in the back, soy sauce & fish guts, light oxidation is there as well, faint old wood, quite a bit of anise, big on liquorish & Christmas spices alongside the umami qualities, making this seem a bit like some odd very strong BE & DE hybrid beer, warming in the back of your throat, lingering caramelized & burned black liquorish aftertaste, more black liquorish, burned coffee, ashes,… Some burned qualities,… Old charred wood. There is even a light brine note here in the back, intense. Quite sweet in a heavily umami beer. Thick lager with very little in the way of carbonation. Intense, interesting, even if not really my style or preference. Lots of elements which I am not really into, presented in an interesting way. Not really what I expected when got this but not really disliking it either. I really had to get used a bit to it, take it in on its own terms. Hard to believe that I wound up somewhat enjoying something with this many liquorish, soy sauce, fish guts, anise etc. notes,… Given the hops, fresh this must have been a very different experience but given the profile of this, it must have been an even stranger one. Unless if those hops were buried from the start. A herbal + medicinal bitterness starts becoming more pronounced as you drink more of it, hops perhaps? I do get some light hoppy notes but they are faint but that should be expected given the age.

Shared bottle. Very dark brown with small beige head. Rye bread, burnt bread crust, very yeasty, some coffee, earthy, molasses. Medium sweet with musty middle and light bitter finish. Medium bodied with low carbonation.

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2015 Dark brown colour with almost no light brown head. Aroma of roasted barley malts, oak, and other woody notes. Taste is firstly caramel sweet, with evident alcohol note, which immediately disappear. Finish is bitter/sweet, and at the same time you can detect, that this beer have a high IBU. But the question is, which hops did they used? Anyway: Full body. very gentle, soft carbonation, medium bitterness. Cane sugar sweet - hoppy aftertaste with woody (oak bourbon) notes. Very interseting, complex beer.

Clear reddish brown black colour, beige head. Fruity aroma, blackcurrant, forrest fruit, coffee, dried figs. Bitter hoppy flavour, coffee, caramel. Finish caramel, roasted malt, ash, brown sugar and lingering hops. Nice!

330 ml bottle. Pours a black colour with a small white head. Aroma of sweet syrup, wet earth and grass. Flavour of toasted malts, coffee, licorice, some chocolate, ash, grassy bitterness and roastiness. Almost full bodied. Rich and enjoyable.

Bottle. Darker brown in color with a whitish head. Sweeter vibes on the nose at first here, some dark fruits atleast is present. Bit of campfire and dark bready notes appears later on. The roasted notes are there too. A nice mix. Near full bodied. Sweet maltyness and roasted coffee notes tastewise. Nutty and bitter notes in finish. Interesting.

bottle at home bought at de molen webshop. poured a dark brown to black colour with a smaller tanned head on top, nose of sweet caramel sweetness, roasted coffee notes, liqorice, some notes of anice, roasted malts, dark red fruits in the end, prunes, some raisins, leaving into a full bodied sweet aftertaste.

Collaboration brew of three progressive and innovative micro brewers. Green bottle with only a front label. Moussy, light beige, irregular and thin head, eventually all but disappearing, over a very dark hazy reddish brown beer, almost black but transparent around the edges. Less strong and less complex aroma than I had expected (or hoped), still inviting though, with hints of fondant chocolate bar (especially when warming up), caramel candy, pine wood, toffee, brown bread, rhum, toast, burnt leaves and ashes, port, Worcestershire sauce, cloves, dried banana, some less elegant wet paper, rainwater and dusty cellar notes but these fortunately fade away quickly so I will not let this ruin the fun - or influence my rating too much. Lovely malty taste profile, oily and smooth, with soft carbonation, a pointy hint of candied dates and raisin sweetness at first, concentrated, blending into a rich caramelly, biscuity, toasted and bitter chocolatey maltiness, wonderful bittersweet effect, adorned with a complex hop bitter finish, peppery, earthy, resinous and even slightly grapefruit peel-like; the claim that very different hop varieties have been used, is clearly justified. To my palate, the resinous, spicy hoppiness and the soft, sweetish caramelly and toasted maltiness work very well together; a rhum-like alcohol warmth comes in the very end, powerful yet ’friendly’ and gracious. This is a Baltic porter alright, clearly bottom-fermented (very low ’esteriness’) and very malt forward, but ’pimped’ with a ’modern’ hop profile and the first one I know of which is brewed in Germany, where foreign beer styles are very slowly beginning to penetrate here and there... I can highly recommend this one to maltheads, this is a great sipper and among the best lagers I had so far.
