4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Deep amber colour, nice fine condition. malty nose, slightly nutty, but with a nice dark / dried fruit edge to it. Surprisingly dry on the palate for a dopplebock, warming dark fruit (prunes, touch of blackcurrant) on the palate, with a touch of alcohol, decent hopping all the way (Hallertauer ?), which bids us farewell in a nice complex and bitter finish.
A far cry from the usual syrupy, cloying doppelbocks, very drinkable, warming, and a darn nice winter brew.
[keg, at the brewery tap in Freiburg]
Deep reddish-amber colour, splendid head. Incredibly rich nose, with the dark fruit, blackcurrnat and prunes dominant. Palate is slightly sweeter than bottled, moderate carbonation, rich, warming, with the fruit still dominating. Finish in harmony with the rest, with enough bitterness to offet any tendency to cloying / syrupy.
Definitely worth the 2-hour train trip to Freiburg !

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Half-litre on 11 Sep 2013 in the Brauereiausschank on Munsterplatz, Freiburg.
Ruby brown body, next to no head.
Sweet and malty in aroma and taste: I really liked it, but I’m a big Doppelbock fan.
Caramel and sweet malty molasses throughout the tasting, with a slight bitter and mini alcoholic kick towards the finish.
A very pleasant and easy drinking Doppelbock, the brewery tap being the best place I could have chosen to drink it.

Thanks to bartlebier or this bottle! Pours a dark reddish brown with a small tan head. Smell is brown sugar, toffee, dark ripe fruit. Taste is dark fruit, caramel, a bit of alcohol ending dry and a bit crisp. The body is medium and it is oily and slick. The carbonation is about average. Pretty nice dopplebock.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
50cl. Thanks Rian for sharing!

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
6x50cl from Ganter Brauerei around the corner. Straightforward, but convincing roasty and tasty doppelbock. Both dry and sweetish but not cloying, minimally alcoholic - could stand some aging? Had this on tap at the brewpub where it was slightly more creamy, from the bottle it is less spectacular but still above average, compared to the dark dobbelbock plonk I have had in Germany lately...
