For those of you who donít know Aro there is a light side and a dark side to the valley. For those of us on the dark side of the street itís been a long dark winter. But salvation is nigh. The coming of Spring has brought the first teasing hints that the sun might come again to the Garage.

Bottle. A dark brown beer with a small, beige head. Unclear. The aroma is roasted tending towards burnt, with some charcoal and dried fruits. Prunes and dried figs. Some sweetness in the flavor, but itís actually quite dry. Roasted malts, charcoal and dark dried fruits. Full body and a pleasant carbonation level. Lasting roasted and lightly burnt finish with some charcoal and prunes. A bit burnt for my likings, but a fine beer anyway. 141220

Very, very dark with only faint ruby highlights and small beige head that doesnít last long. Dark chocolate in the aroma, with earthy hops, some molasses, caramel, a little roasted meat. Taste is between a porter and black IPA and exactly as the smell suggests, with a long dry and ashy finish. Medium bodied and somewhat prickly on the tongue. Good hop-forward porter.

A strongish stout from the Land of the Long Goodbye after which I will presumably require a Bug Sleep. Iíll stop now. Small growler. Dark brown with a lovely beige head that lasts well. Aroma of sticky bread crusts, milk chocolate, pine, slight but vibrant tropical fruit notes. Was going to say surprisingly vibrant, but theyíre all over the taste, pushing mocha and bread into the background. Sweet with quite a lot of piney bitterness at the end. Maybe a bit too much, really. Some Sichaun pepper too. Tasty but not entirely harmonious.

Bottle. Pours an lovely-looking oily black body with a thick, medium creamy off-white head. Nose is grass, pine, chocolate, mild licorice and hints of coffee and bready malts. Taste is bitter herbs, dark chocolate, cocoa, pine and hints of grass, Medium body and carbonation. Not bad, but very bitter and a bit unbalanced; a bit more sweetness would have suited it better.

500mL bottle. Near black beer, pours a dense beige head. Good nose packed full of tropical fruity & spicy hop, with roasted notes of espresso & dark chocolate in the mix. Full bodied, quite rich, smooth carbonation. Plenty to enjoy on the palate - chocolate malts, solid hop presence, good bitterness on a long finish. Solid beer, surely itís a Black IPA!? Oh well, still good.

650ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a moderate beige head, which lasts well and leaves decent lacing. Milk chocolate, hints of coffee, savoury nutty notes and faint floral hops make up the aroma. Mild spice hops up front give way to black coffee and cocoa in the mid-palate. Nutty notes give the finish a pleasantly savoury feel. This is not the most groundbreaking stout around, but it is pretty enjoyable nevertheless, and quite good on a rainy night.
