3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Jimthechap (1195) - Christchurch, - NOV 5, 2012I made this assessment based upon a measure poured off tap from Cassel’s. I waited for it to warm up from the over-cold gas pour and saw that it was black with ruby notes in the dimple of the glass. Aromas came forth of raisin and plum sauce, inedible cherry but still it was too cold. I tasted (said Hemmingway), it was cold and it was like Renaissance Elemental Porter, a beer I LOVE. It had the berry and plum with touches of coffee, red plums and coffee. An understated stout but immediately drinkable until you get to the point where you can’t drive, can’t speak properly and can’t engage third gear on your legs. My best advice is to lower the alcohol. Please?
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Pdubyah (108) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 17, 2013
It’s a box of tricks alright. Lots of strong notes and not a one of them more dominant than the others. I was disappointed int he aroma, but then I got a lot of fun with the taste, I would have like less a bitterness, but that’s picking. but each sip/gulp has something each time. Very good. And you’ll find yourself 2 or 3 of these inside you easily making the walk home a bit wobbly.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DylansDad (157) - NEW ZEALAND - MAY 15, 2013
Thinner, less sweet, less ’stouty’ than expected, as someone else said, very much a stout porter. Lots of dark plums and raisin, a bit of coffee and a warm slightly spicy finish. I really took my time with this and it paid off: the beer was a bit one dimensional at first, but after the bottle had been open for half an hour or so, it really got its act together and became very more-ish
3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 omega (489) - NEW ZEALAND - MAY 2, 2013
Enticing aromas that draw you in. Poured with quite a fluffy tan head. Quite tarry on the palate this is a beer to savour and enjoy.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 maneliquor (1553) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - APR 27, 2013
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours pitch black with a small tan head which lasts the duration. Leaves fantastic lacing all the way down to the bottom of the glass. Looks like it has higher carbonation than most stouts. Nose shows cocoa, liquorice, very roasty, light citrus notes, and a touch a plummy. Raisins & currants come through in the taste with the chocolate powdered notes and heavy roast. Citrus hops seem to follow with some heavy hop bitterness finishing it off. Very sessionable stuff. Solid without being amazing
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 HopRedHead (120) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - APR 27, 2013
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours pitch black with a smooth 2cm of tan head. Smells like dark chocolate and a touch of floral hoppiness. Taste is dark chocolate and coffee, bready malt with a hoppy bitterness. Medium body. Not sure if the hops really complement the taste of this stout but a challenging beer none the less.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 NBird (139) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - APR 24, 2013
Mostly black, slightest deep red tinge against light, sml creamy head. Smells.. Dark fruit and sultanas, toasty malt. Tastes.. More dark fruit/ plum and sultana, some peppery or spicy hints, roasted malt and some bold roast coffee flavours toward the end- tastes more boozy than the 7.1% it says, I dig it.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 pmuzz (264) - AUSTRALIA - APR 10, 2013
Solid stout. Good balance and flavours. As per Jimthechap, need to lower the etoh to make it more sessionable!
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 stoutnick (164) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - APR 1, 2013
Look is all noir. Aroma is roasted malt - smells like a porter! Taste is roasty and bitter, like a porter. Palate clings a little. Overall, a decent stout, but not more favourite sort. Prefer a bit more sweetness.
