For those of you who don’t know Aro there is a light side and a dark side to the valley. For those of us on the dark side of the street it’s been a long dark winter. But salvation is nigh. The coming of Spring has brought the first teasing hints that the sun might come again to the Garage.

I made this assessment based upon a measure poured off tap from Cassel’s. I waited for it to warm up from the over-cold gas pour and saw that it was black with ruby notes in the dimple of the glass. Aromas came forth of raisin and plum sauce, inedible cherry but still it was too cold. I tasted (said Hemmingway), it was cold and it was like Renaissance Elemental Porter, a beer I LOVE. It had the berry and plum with touches of coffee, red plums and coffee. An understated stout but immediately drinkable until you get to the point where you can’t drive, can’t speak properly and can’t engage third gear on your legs. My best advice is to lower the alcohol. Please?

Bottle @ home. Pours a red/brown liquid with a stable and creamy beige head. Dry and a bit sweet roasted and malty aroma with notes of dark fruits, coffee, charcoal, leather, dark chocolate. Taste is bitter and roasted with some sour wet charcoal notes. Taste has coffee, leather, some nicely balancing maltiness, caramel and dark fruits. Dry texture and small mouth feel, medium carbonation with sharp bubbles. Aftertaste is dry with lingering charcoal, dark chocolate, tart roastiness, leather and licorice. Some warming alcohol in background. Lasting coffee bitterness.

Pours oily with a thick tan head that completely dissipates. Flavour is bitter, front, middle and end of palate and no follow through to balance it off. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a nearly opaque black with a brown head that lingers for ages. Toast and cocoa powder dominate the aroma with hints of fruity yeast esters and catty hops. Flavour brings dark cocoa powder, bitter chocolate, and toast. The finish is very dry and bitter with a lingering astringency.

Bottle from brewery. Very dark, bitter stout. Plenty of coffee, charcoal, leather and bitter dark chocolate going on. A stout to put hairs on your chest!

Black body with a light brown, long-lived head that ends up as a thin layer, good lacing. Strong aroma of dark roasted malt and coffee, chocolate in the back together with a faint generic fruitiness. Strong flavour of dark roasted malt, coffee, sweet caramel, ash and a bit more fruits than in the aroma. Light to moderate sweet taste with a long-lasting moderate to light bitter finish. Close to full body, smooth and a bit dry texture, rather soft carbonation. A nice stout that has more punch than the 7% ABV indicates.

Botte shared with JMD at HNB 29.04.15. Black. Foamy, dense and persistent pale brown head and lacing. Aroma of black coffee and black malt. Even better taste, balanced with good bitterness and roasted wood. Quite dry.

65cl bottle shared by Arve_Christian, thanks a lot. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Roasty aroma with bitter chocolate, hints of coffee and dark fruits. Medium sweet with lovely roasty flavours and a quite bitter finish. Tasty and quite delicious!
