This has been one of the most challenging Garage brews to date. At its heart was the idea of combining aggressive, high citrus character of American hops with the heat and sweetness of Indochine flavours. Have you ever tried a Vietnamese mango and chili salad? If you havenít you should. It could be life changing. Itís an idea that has been rattling around the Garage consciousness for a while and the Great Australasian Beer Spectapular seemed like a fitting opportunity to give it an outing. It was always going to be a challenging brew to pull off Ė mango, chili, Vietnamese mint and lime juice arenít exactly conventional ingredients. Donít bother checking, they arenít listed in the Reinheitsgebot. Add a lavish addition of Chinook, Centennial, Citra and Amarillo hops, a deadline launch for an international beer festival and take it straight to a 2000 litre batch without any chance for small scale testing and you get what could have been a recipe for spectacular, monumental disaster. The idea of trying to bring all these flavours together in a coherent way given the pressure of time and prospect of public humiliation was, frankly, shit scary.

Pours well. Small off white head. Plenty of mango hop aroma. Grapefruit on the tongue. Nice and dry on the finish with puckering bitterness.

Itís not often you get a bracingly good beer that also has a downside. Despite liking this a lot it is a beer that takes you right to the upper end of bitterness and hop heavy, and for that I think itís a beer that youíd either transition to or from and not be a beer that youíd have two in a row. Just me thinking. I likes the peppery notes in the aroma, and the heat in the palate and the other flavours that you get with this. Cracking and if you can get one do, itís a bit good.

Sample from bottle at Beer14. Pours clear amber with off-white head. Fruity and mild hoppy aroma with citrus hints of pine, pale malt and spices. Medium sweet with a balanced bitterness. Aahh! Now comes the chilli! Lovely!

Can from Slow Beer (November 2013). Bright copper-orange, small creamy off-white head, floral, citrusy aroma, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, subtle chilli bite, passionfruit, mango, quite complex flavours, sweet malt towards the finish, but resiney bitterness lasts the longest, medium body, dry finish. Brilliant!

Gonzo Mango kissed fuck pot of an IPA. Well balanced, but super hoppy. Lots of mint, lime, mango, tropical fruit. Works surprisingly well with a hint of heat on the end. Can artwork is sweet too. Only down point is the $11.50 price tag for one can (!?).

Awesome experimental beer. So much going on in this one. Everything added to the brew comes through in the aroma and the flavour, lots of mango, lime and chilli. The chilli is not blatant, slowly warms the more you drink. The label could also be seen as quite politically incorrect as well to some.

Can. The head is robust. It smells hopintensive, citrus, bit spicy, mint, aromatic. The taste is hopintensive, citrus, fruity, flowery, spicy, almost crazy aromatic. Highly delicious!

Pours a pretty deep orange/amber with a 3 finger head that doesnít hang around too long. Incredible aromas of grapefruit, mango, lime and mint. The taste is the same with the addition of light chilli in the finish. The beer is medium-bodied on the palate. IPAs arenít usually my favourite style but Iím a big fan of Thai and SE Asian foods and this beer really works for me. Will definitely seek this out again. Also love the can label.
