This has been one of the most challenging Garage brews to date. At its heart was the idea of combining aggressive, high citrus character of American hops with the heat and sweetness of Indochine flavours. Have you ever tried a Vietnamese mango and chili salad? If you haven’t you should. It could be life changing. It’s an idea that has been rattling around the Garage consciousness for a while and the Great Australasian Beer Spectapular seemed like a fitting opportunity to give it an outing. It was always going to be a challenging brew to pull off – mango, chili, Vietnamese mint and lime juice aren’t exactly conventional ingredients. Don’t bother checking, they aren’t listed in the Reinheitsgebot. Add a lavish addition of Chinook, Centennial, Citra and Amarillo hops, a deadline launch for an international beer festival and take it straight to a 2000 litre batch without any chance for small scale testing and you get what could have been a recipe for spectacular, monumental disaster. The idea of trying to bring all these flavours together in a coherent way given the pressure of time and prospect of public humiliation was, frankly, shit scary.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet Sørlandssenteret. Pours unclear orange to copper. Above average amount of white head. Very bitter. Warming. Oily and medium to thick body. Apricot, alcohol, caramel, malt flavour. Too much alcohol warmth actually makes it hard to pick out flavours. A good beer nonetheless. Ok, I read the bottle label now. It’s of course the chili I feel burning. Mango flavours are also recognisable. Can’t find any mint though.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet Manglerud enjoyed at home
Copper, very hazed, big beige frothy head. Smell of grapefruit, mint, citrus zests, anise, othere herbs and spices. Moderate sweet, spicy, more mint and pine, some juicy tendensies.Ends of with a medium bitter tail with a solid chili sting. Quite unusual hop bill, and it works quite well with the additatives in this one. Why haven’t anyone else thought of an ipa with chili, mango, mint and lime? I think it’s a great idea!!

Bottle at Øltorget, june 7th 2014. Almost clear orange body with a small white head. Aroma is intense fruity, lime, mango, garepfruit, taste in the same direction, with a mild chili added, the mango and chili combo here is just awesome, light bitterness, slightly piney, dry and refreshing mango/chili finish. This is one of the creative additions to an IPA that really works well.

Tan orange look with nice beige head. Pine, herbal notes and spices on the aroma. Light sweetness and high bitterness on the taste with all the spiced mouthfeel. Refreshing, dry-light sweet finish with low carbonation. Nice one.
