This has been one of the most challenging Garage brews to date. At its heart was the idea of combining aggressive, high citrus character of American hops with the heat and sweetness of Indochine flavours. Have you ever tried a Vietnamese mango and chili salad? If you havenít you should. It could be life changing. Itís an idea that has been rattling around the Garage consciousness for a while and the Great Australasian Beer Spectapular seemed like a fitting opportunity to give it an outing. It was always going to be a challenging brew to pull off Ė mango, chili, Vietnamese mint and lime juice arenít exactly conventional ingredients. Donít bother checking, they arenít listed in the Reinheitsgebot. Add a lavish addition of Chinook, Centennial, Citra and Amarillo hops, a deadline launch for an international beer festival and take it straight to a 2000 litre batch without any chance for small scale testing and you get what could have been a recipe for spectacular, monumental disaster. The idea of trying to bring all these flavours together in a coherent way given the pressure of time and prospect of public humiliation was, frankly, shit scary.

(Bottle) Clear orange brown colour (reminded me somewhat of Lucozade) with a loose tan head, again with some orange hints in it. Lovely fruity aroma, primarily citrusy hops, but with some interesting earthy hints and some other odd hard to place notes. Light body with good carbonation. Taste is impressive and unusual. At heart it is a good well hopped IPA, and citrus flavours turning to pleasant bitterness over a biscuity malt is the backbone of the flavour. However there is a lot more going on on top of this. Chili is detectable, more from heat than flavour. There are several other lighter more refreshing flavours that I struggle to identify but can associate with Vietnamese salad ingredients. A very interesting and unusual beer. I would not drink it regularly, but it is a fine piece of brewing with innovative flavour combinations.

UPDATED: MAY 8, 2014 Deep rich peach. Aroma is tropical fruit. Taste is fruit and big chilli bitterness. Mild burn. Palate is heat. Overall a lovely original spin on the india pale. Love chilli, but perhaps too much here - it overwhelms the other flavours. Otherwise a fresh new beer.

Fruity spice hop aroma. Rich red amber colour with good head and lacing. Spicy fruit malt hop flavour. Fizzy zingy palate. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

East of Everything ontap (26-Jul-13) Sweet fruit, light spice aroma. Deep amber colour, good headand sheetlacing. Sweet and broad mix of spice. Big floral hop chilli finish, with a big lingering chilli hop aftertaste. Perhaps a little too much.

This really was fantastic. A lovely looking beer that smells beautiful. Taste is good, lots of hops, cant really appreciate the mango, but the lime mint and chilli come through at the end. The chilli is far from overpowering, rather it balances out nicely the bitterness of the hops.

[650ml bottle, courtesy of Sevare] Mango, mint, lime and chilli. Not a combination Iíve been exposed to before. Quite the chilli burn, which I was not expecting Ė particularly following the aroma, which was bitter, chillified mango. Interesting stuff, maybe a touch too much chilli for the rest of the ingredients for my personal taste [21062013]

Absolute stunner. Surprisingly and thankfully, and amazingly, despite all the wacky and exotic ingredients and witchcraft that went into this... despite the mango, chili, Vietnamese mint and lime juice, despite all that, it is still a beer. For me the aroma is classic American IPA. The taste is a lovely caramelly toffee sweet malt base at the front, the orangey citric and resiny hops waylay you in the middle and the end is birds-eye chili. DO NOT BE AFRAID. The heat is very subtle at the beginning, and gradually warms as you make your way through the bottle. I wish I had another bottle.

UPDATED: NOV 27, 2013 Wowee. Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours hazy orange with a small white head with some nice lacing. Nose shows big, juicy hops - citrus, mango, pine, mont and chilli. Very enticing stuff. Taste is big hop driven citrus notes, heavy tropical fruits, and chilli. The chilli is damn hot. Probably one of the hottest beers Iíve had to date. Very bitter sweet. Really well made stuff. Very good

Bottle, thanks Sev. Amber with slightly off white head. Musty fruity aroma, resinous, citrus and mango. Taste is very interesting, bit strange but very tasty, citrus, mango, chili, something aromatic. Bitter with a nice chili kick. Good stuff.
