COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This has been one of the most challenging Garage brews to date. At its heart was the idea of combining aggressive, high citrus character of American hops with the heat and sweetness of Indochine flavours. Have you ever tried a Vietnamese mango and chili salad? If you haven’t you should. It could be life changing. It’s an idea that has been rattling around the Garage consciousness for a while and the Great Australasian Beer Spectapular seemed like a fitting opportunity to give it an outing. It was always going to be a challenging brew to pull off – mango, chili, Vietnamese mint and lime juice aren’t exactly conventional ingredients. Don’t bother checking, they aren’t listed in the Reinheitsgebot. Add a lavish addition of Chinook, Centennial, Citra and Amarillo hops, a deadline launch for an international beer festival and take it straight to a 2000 litre batch without any chance for small scale testing and you get what could have been a recipe for spectacular, monumental disaster. The idea of trying to bring all these flavours together in a coherent way given the pressure of time and prospect of public humiliation was, frankly, shit scary.

Bottle from the source. Hazy amber color, white head. Aroma of dank and sweaty hops and plants. Taste is very bitter grass and pine resin. Would like to see it better balanced, but I get the point.

500mL thanks to Travlr! Fresh from NZ. Pours a clear deeper orange. Spotty lace. Weak foam. Nose is candied orange peel, sweat, mild cheese, toffee, rye bread. Taste is clean, mildly dusty, bitter, nut skins, spicy habanero...something waxy and spicy unexpected. Palate is dry, aggressive, but drinkable.

Can. The head is robust. It smells hopintensive, citrus, bit spicy, mint, aromatic. The taste is hopintensive, citrus, fruity, flowery, spicy, almost crazy aromatic. Highly delicious!

UPDATED: NOV 27, 2013 Wowee. Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours hazy orange with a small white head with some nice lacing. Nose shows big, juicy hops - citrus, mango, pine, mont and chilli. Very enticing stuff. Taste is big hop driven citrus notes, heavy tropical fruits, and chilli. The chilli is damn hot. Probably one of the hottest beers I’ve had to date. Very bitter sweet. Really well made stuff. Very good

On draught @ Sail & Anchor ‘Hey Brew 2’ New Zealand Craft Brew Week, Fremantle.
Hazy, deep orange with a whisked up, messy head of foam atop that is lasting. Aroma is dominated by passionfruit, mango and dusty malts. The mint comes through as does a little chamomile (?) and caramel, but it is the fruit that wins in bouquet. Sprightly and lively; it moves at a rapid pace across the palate. Boldly bitter and herbaceous in the back with a sourish tang of lime juice and musk of Vietnamese mint on the exit and chilli heat in the finish. Firm, chunky sweet malts upfront doused in citrus and passionfruit flavours. Holds well as it warms - everything balances out. The addition of mango all but lost in the taste. A full pint was a treat, but a second I can’t say would follow. An impressive take on a Pale Ale none-the-less.

Wantonly crassly branded bottle, 9C. Copper with a white head that’s soon a coat that hangs around. Grapefruit and pine aroma with tropical fruit, chilli and lime. Lowish carbonation - at first seems a little too low but works very well. Tastes very much as described, there’s a real bite of Vietnamese mint and a little heat from the chilli. The hops reassert themselves at the end and mingle with the complex pepperiness. Fruit came out a bit more as it warmed. Hops and novelty elements really worked well together for me.

Gonzo Mango kissed fuck pot of an IPA. Well balanced, but super hoppy. Lots of mint, lime, mango, tropical fruit. Works surprisingly well with a hint of heat on the end. Can artwork is sweet too. Only down point is the $11.50 price tag for one can (!?).

Bottle, thanks Sev. Amber with slightly off white head. Musty fruity aroma, resinous, citrus and mango. Taste is very interesting, bit strange but very tasty, citrus, mango, chili, something aromatic. Bitter with a nice chili kick. Good stuff.
