COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed better than nature to battle it out at GABS 2014, Mecha-Hop - 100% Industrial Process Ale. Uding only the finest vacuum evaporated pure dry malt extract and Warrior, Amarillo and Simcoe liquid CO2 hop extracts, this beast of a beer weighs in at 10% abv and over 100 IBU. Guaranteed no raw, unprocessed ingredients - the modernist dream at its unheeding arrogant best. The bold new world of Garage Project - welcome to the future. What could possibly go wrong?

Looks.. Amber / mahogany tinge, medium dirty white head. Smells..sweet malts, red honey, floral hops, and a little booze. Tastes..super sticky sweet malts, sugar dominates, some boozy stonefruit, definitely bitter and some alcohol warmth. Too sweet.

This is all over the show like a mad womans hair. Itís dense flavours, itís sweet, itís bitter and itís all going on like a rabble at the sales. BUT what a cracking effort of a beer. BUT this is a lot of drinking for one person and thatís a lot of things to process in one glass. Itís like a clash of many styles of beer and Barley Wine, and Quadrupel, come to mind. Itís my mind it does itís own things. Iíd say you have to try this just because itís made from the same sort of things that home-brew is made from, a can of malts and some sprinkles of things. Weird, some of it in a good way.

I really, really, really wanted to like this beer but Iím afraid itís a swing and a miss in my book. Was just too much in the end - maybe a toned down (5-7%) version would be better? A rare miss by the GP crew - but no foul.

Despite the Amarillo and Simcoe, this beer has none of the expected citrus/orange etc. It actually smells like an Old World Belgian or English strong Ale. Taste is very one-dimensional, this beer doesnít open up in your mouth. All the flavours are lost in a dark green bitter herbal medicine gloop. Perhaps because of the high bitterness and high alcohol. I was also surprised that the claimed 100IBU didnít pucker my mouth at all. I think this beer proves the saying "less is more". Having said that, itís not a BAD beer. Itís just a barley wine with a bad haircut, and good on Garage Project for trying something different. Sometimes it comes off.

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2014 First thing you notice is the colour - a big deep amber that just screams flavour. First hit from Mecha is subtle and then the tail comes around and knocks you on your arse. Soft, balanced, dangerously drinkable with good length on the palate. All day I have waiting to try this beer, and have been like a little school girl squeeing with excitement. Thankfully not disappointed! SQUEE! Combined with it being my 666 rating - Slayer achievement gained!
