The arrival of hops to the brewing scene in England in the 1500ís led to a moral panic. Hops were condemned as a ďwicked and pernicious weedĒ, one which would lead to the erosion of social and moral standards. Thank goodness they were right. Hereís hoping that our homage to the original pernicious weed continues this gradual decline. Organic Rakau and whole cone Nelson Sauvin go head to head in this strong, golden, hoppy brew. Bitter, yes. Intensely hoppy, absolutely. Too much, never.

Pours a hazy golden-orange with a little bit of very fine off white head.
Nose is pretty spectacular. Pineapple, peach, mango, and passionfruit, with a little caramel, but almost nothing compared with the crazy hop aroma.
Flavour is straight to the point. This is not a balanced or measured DIPA, itís just all hops. And after tasting a fair few sweeter DIPAs, this is refreshing. Pineapple for days, some graininess, orange, a slight amount of pine and biscuit on the finish, and for my hop seasoned palate to be registering a fair amount of bitterness, this has to be pretty crazy bitter.
Really tasty, balls to the wall hoppiness.

Can, thanks to Dave. It pours hazy pale orange with a medium white head. The nose is rich, juicy, orange, sherbet, tangerine and marmalade. The taste is crisp, juicy, orange, tangerine, grapefruit, minerals, light spice, pine and some alcohol with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Very impressive stuff indeed. Crisp, juicy and damn tasty.

Can split at Craft Clerko, big thanks to Dave Wingman Willis, 27/01/14. Hazed orange amber with a medium off white covering that retains well. Nose is bitter skunky hops, pine, tropical fructis tones, bitter grapefruit. Taste comprises bitter grapefruit, lemon rind, orange pith, straw, pine resin. Solid DIPA, nice skunked up stuff.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2014 Urine is not an exaggeration here. Of the hundreds of hop-driven beers Iíve found something like urine in, this one takes the (urinal) cake. The strongest, foulest aroma of concentrated pee Iíve ever smelled, like walking into a baseball stadium bathroom that is intentionally never cleaned. To be creative I came up with descriptors other than urine: Jujube candy, plant matter, armpit funk, foot fungus, putrefied butter, burnt peaches, olive brine and garlic. Seriously, it even starts smelling like deer beds where they shit and pee and lay around in it, itís super game-y. Lemon-scented wood polish and alcohol and sugar syrup and bitter plant matter and pee, like a taking a piss after being dehydrated and eating asparagus and drinking coffee, thatís what the flavor profile is about... I couldnít stand more than a sip and I went to wash my mouth out after. Delivered in a goopy, syrupy, yeasty body. Medium sweetness but the aggressive bitterness gives it a sense of dryness. I think the "art of craft beer" has come full circle here and made something more foul than the laziest, cheapest Malt Liquor producer could make. If you like drinking pee (nothing wrong with that) this is your beer. I should note that the small sample from tap I had seemed decent, and that the other can from Garage Project (a petite saison) was also yeasty and unbalanced, so itís likely that this is a canning issue more than recipe issue.

The head is robust, the body orange. It smells hopintensive, malty-creamy, aromatic, fruity. The taste is fruity, flowery, hoparomatic, malty-creamy, aromatic, intensive, bit creamy-alcoholic. Good 3.9

My 100th NZ beer rating, on the sixth day of my trip, and it comes in the least likely place - Taupo, more or less a beer desert. Fortunately I planned ahead and stocked up in Rotorura and Okere. Bottle. Cloudy to murky variegated golden orange color, big fluffy white head. Beautiful aroma of orange, peach, pineapple, tropical fruit, herbal weeds. Taste is bitter dried tropical fruit. Dry finish. I vote against the church on this one - it doesnít seem pernicious to me at all.

Bottle from Slowbeer. Dark orange/amber, strong tropical fruit, grass, pine, grapefruit, pineapple, solid piney/resinous bitterness but well balanced with a solid malt base. Very nice.

Fantastic ipa, up there with hopwired. Beautiful flavours and a nice balance that rolls to an aggressive bitterness. Winner.
