3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 EdKing (941) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - DEC 23, 2011
From notes on my 2010 visit to Tokyo. Ordered on draft in Hotel in Tachikawa. Comes in a strange pointed bottom triangular glass sitting in a holder. Nice roasted grain, chocolate and coffee nose. Taste is same, but with a bit of smokiness and overall it’s quite sweet. Only criticism is that there is a fair amount of carbonation in it so it’s a wee bit too fizzy.

On tap at La Terrazza on the top floor of Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office Building. Poured perfectly dark brown with a creamy beige head into the cone-shaped, Kwak-inspired glass. Sweet maltiness and roasted aroma. Molasses prevail in the mouth, though with moderate roast. Quite alright.

I’d just missed this at about three bars, having always showed up right after the last pint was dispensed. It was my first order of the night at Cheers, but even they couldn’t get fill a full pint of it. I’m starting to think there is a conspiracy. Anyhow, dark with a nice head. Roasted malts, smoke, bitter chocolate, and some coffee. Bitter roasted malts, cocoa, molasses, and light smoke. I really enjoyed this one, maybe I’ll find a whole pint sometime.

Medium light brown head, creamy on top, lasting. Dark red body, barely translucent. Acidic smoky roasty aroma, quite mild. Bitter acidic smoky licorice taste, a bit sharp. Dry, sour smoky aftertaste. Minty notes linger. Very unusual, like mix of Flemish sour and stout. Nice glass. (0.5l on tap, on 45th floor of Tokyo Municipal Government building.)
