3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 PaulHegedus (550) - - FEB 7, 2012
Bottle. Dark brown colour with a slight red hue. Half inch off white head. Pleasant hop aroma of pine, grass and mild grapefruit with coffee in behind. Very aromatic. Medium bodied. Dry coffee in the flavour, then dark chocolate leading to caramel malt flavours and a hint of citrus. Bitter throughout. Long dry finish.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 bunget (140) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 3, 2012
Muddy brown body, almost black, with a huge mocha head, very decent retention. Aroma is a sweet caramel and hop mix, chocolate, vanilla, pine freshness. Taste is stout dryness and bitterness, chocolate, strong aggressive hops, some wood charcoal and liquorish. A strong taste from a strong brew.

I really enjoy this style and am happy (hoppy? euhh..) to see it stretch across the continent. This beer, while nice, is not the best representative of the Black IPA though. I don’t think the grassy hops go that well with black malt. Still better than most beers though, so cheers.

Seems to be more brown than black. Some off-white head sitting on top. A decent enough hop aroma. Good herbal and pine qualities. As usual, lots of roasted malt notes, too. The flavor is quite dry with a lot of roasted malt. Good herbal and pine hop flavors with some mild citrus peel. A nice bitterness to the flavor, too. Not bad.

This has bitterness. Hoppy flavour and a little dark cream on the palate. Smells hoppy with a little alcohol. Some roast malt in the taste Malt has a little bit of a caramelized finish as well. Bottle

500mL bottle from LCBO. Pours clear dark brown with a thin tan head. Mild aroma of fruity hops and roasted barley. Taste is quite good - this is one of the better balanced Black IPAs I’ve had - a blend of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, fruity hops, and a quite bitter finish, without any one flavour dominating too much. Actually as I drink more of it I am finding the roasty coffee flavours are dominating a bit more. Not that that’s a bad thing. A little on the thin and fizzy side. Overall quite good.

500mL bottle, lickboe. Pours a clear amberish brown with a large beige head. So much for being ’unfiltered’. Aroma has a lot of piney and citrusy hop characters, checked by caramalts and roasty malts. Flavour is also very well balanced, with more of an emphasis on hop flavour than bitterness, which is probably why this is the only ’Black IPA’ that I’ve ever really enjoyed. The malt body compliments the generous hop proportions, and I find that in this style the two are usually way out of sync. Minor hint of booze, with a medium body. Damn, Garrison is actually a really solid brewery. I can almost understand why the LCBO charges $50 a bottle for this and other fine Garrison brews.

Pours black. . .huh, go figure, thin beige cap. The aroma is piney, a bit toasty, malt extract? Grapefruit. Flavor follows suit, big on the piney hop notes, some roastiness shows up mid way through, chocolate and stale black coffee, ends on a grapefruit rind note mixed with unsweetend chocolate. Ibu’s r a little rough around the edges. An enjoyable brew, but wouldnt go out of my way for it.

Botlle from LC, pours a nice black with a good head, aroma of citrusy hops and a nice malty body with a good bitter finish. Overall quite enjoyable.

It pours a dark mahogany almost black; the head is a mousy off-cream that dissipates quickly. The aroma has notes of: butter, toffee, pineapple, and mango. The taste is bitter and finishes long; it has notes of: pineapple, green apple, and burnt espresso. The palate is medium-light bodied, aqueous, with a long bitter finish. Overall, it’s a generic example of the black IPA style; nothing special.
