COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This traditional beer style was originally brewed in countries bordering the Baltic Sea. Although derived from English porters, it was mostly influenced by Russian imperial stouts. Typically, the Baltic porters are brewed with lager yeasts and are smoother than the imperial stouts. Grand Baltic Porter is good for the soul & luxurious on a cold Baltic night. Skal!

Bottle in the hotel lobby, RBWG ’15, night 2 - 20/02/15 thanks to whomever shared this number. Mahogany brown with a moderate beige covering. Nose is rich roast, dark fruit rinds, light cocoa rub. Taste comprises dark toffee, rich malt, light charr, spice, chocolate. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok Baltic porter.

Alrighty. Halifax home of Alexander Keith’s. Neighbour to Garrison. Well, not quite. Next visit to Hali, I must visit! Very nice pour, dark brown colour. Aromas of chocolate, coffee and hints of vanilla. Almost similar in taste, along with roasted malts and molasses. For 9%er, doesn’t feel like it. Deceiving I would say, but in a good way. A little bit bitter aftertaste, but does not diminish overall tastebuds. Yummy!

Bottle during the RBWG lobby share. Pours a clear amber with small white head. The aroma is molasses and brown sugar. Thin mouth with candy sugar and caramel, light booze, nice.

Bottle shared late night during RBWG 2015. Vintage 2011. Pours reddish brown with a creamy tan head. Some oxidation present on the nose, a bit of cocoa, toasted caramel. Medium sweets or, sugary, with some brown sugar, earthy hops, toffee. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Sugary dark malt finish with mellow chocolate. Not bad.

500ml bottle, tasted during RBWG hotel tasting. Hazy amber brown color. Thin off-white head. Ropes and dots and bits of lace. Medium body. Smooth, kind of crisp, sort of soft, lighter carbonation. Light slick finish. Dark chocolate, dark fruit, some oxidization. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of crisp lighter carbonation, mild slick finish. Decent porter, but seems like it’s past its prime. Kind of an acidic finish.

Bottle - Vintage 2011 - Sweet dark chocolate, roast and some molasses. Deep dark brown with a nice light brown head. Cocoa and sweet caramel with a light bitter finish. Age has taken its toll, but still ok.

I wanted to like this more than I did. Love me a Porter and when things get imperial I usually love them even more. Not bad in any way, just not as smooth tasting or judo-chop kick-ass as I would have thought. Reeks of molasses, leather and peat and darrrrrrkkkkkk chocolate and tart cherries. She tastes like a big old boozy and burnt dark fruitcake. The mouthfeel was a wee syrupy for me. I know big dogs like this should only be barked at in moderation but I can’t see having more than one every now and then as a wild treat.

Bottle. The only Baltic Porter, I have tried, but hopefully not last. Garrison is probably one of my most favourite breweries as it really pushes the envelope for breweries in Atlantic Canada. This beer tasted of dark fruit, chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, liquorice, very complex. A lot going on in this brew, but it all meets in the end. A little boozy, but in a warming way. Not a whole lot of carbonation bot a whole lot of mouth feel. a real great brew.
