COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This traditional beer style was originally brewed in countries bordering the Baltic Sea. Although derived from English porters, it was mostly influenced by Russian imperial stouts. Typically, the Baltic porters are brewed with lager yeasts and are smoother than the imperial stouts. Grand Baltic Porter is good for the soul & luxurious on a cold Baltic night. Skal!

500mL bottle at a casual Saturday afternoon tasting with matt7215. Bottle from Jeff, thanks to both of you guys. Pours a deep dark reddish-brown that is mostly clear, but with a bit of sediment. Aroma is very much in line with an Imperial Stout. Anise, chocolate, coffee, soy sauce, ink, molasses and toffee, minor booze. Flavour is a a seemless blend of all of the above, nice fuller-feeling palate and definitely rich and satisfying. Not terribly complex, but very tasty and well brewed. A nice standard rendition of a Baltic Porter. Hard to believe this is a Canadian beer!

Since this is fermented with a lager yeast the body id thinner than one would expect in a beer this dark, not altogether unpleasant though, but dicey as the beer comes in at a hefty percentage definitely one to lay down to cellar.

Bottle # 4 of my solo Garrison 5 beer sampler, thanks to C & K! Black, nice thin brown head. Boozy aroma, slightly sour, some chocolate. Taste - whoa, big alcohol up front and more the finish (along with a pleasant roasty linger). In between this one is all over the place - roast, big metallic notes, lactose, and again, way too much unbalanced alcohol. Successful Baltics balance the alcohol with a silky smooth body but this one is too light and fizzy to handle all of this. A nice flavourful effort but it misses the mark. Great effort though, very few of these even being tried in this country. After saying all of this, I did enjoy it.

Thanks to Tupalev. Appearance: Pitch black with a small orange head. Aroma: Malt with lactose, slight chocolate and a tiny tiny amount of alcohol. Flavour: Very thin body, some dark fruit, some carbonation, chocolate, malt, creamy with a spicy finish, kind of made my gums tingle a little.

Bottle (500ml). Shared with blankboy and garthicus, bottle courtesy of tupalev. Near opaque ruby-black, decent fizzy-creamy tan head. Slightly metallic aroma, leafy, dry, slightly boozy, burnt prunes. Taste - burnt molasses, dry herbal bitterness, alcohol, steeped raisins, scorched nutshell - a lot going on, not balanced, but interesting. Light, slick mouthfeel, alcoholic, a bit carbonized - long boozy burnt linger. Nice effort.

[2082-20090410] 500mL bottle. Overly sweet currant malt aroma with mild burnt caramel and a hint of bubblegum in the background. Clear, dark mahogany body with a quick creamy tan head. Wooden toasted malt flavour with lots of burnt grass and a long aftertaste. Medium-full body. Nice toasted, a little too much of it though.

While this is an excellent beer very rich in both malt and hop flavour, the strong alchol taste is overally present. very thick body. a good sipping beer, but maybe a bit too "heavy" for most drinkers.

2009-04-10. Black body with a modest creamy tan head. Moderate alcohol in the aroma, roasty chocolate undertones. (7+) Flavour is pleasant, rich malt, moderate bitterness, mild fruity undertones - dark fruit. Smooth full bodied palate. Simple but pretty good, very enjoyable. Bottle shared by GregClow

500 ml bottle, 2008 edition, sampled 12/5/08. Opaque, very dark brown colour with a mostly lasting creamy and frothy tan head. Licorice, dark fruit, persimmon, roasty, and lightly phenolic smoky aroma with a very light alcohol note. Dark chocolate, licorice, dark fruit, raisin, and roasty coffee flavours with a vinous, acidic, roasty, and lightly phenolic bitter finish. No sign of alcohol or heat at all, just full bodied, chewy and warming. Still very good but I’d put this one a notch below last year’s Black Lager.

Good, not great. Doesn’t warrant the price of admission. Six dollars at my local NB Liquor should good me something along the lines of this brewery’s winter warmer or something enjoyable from Unibroue. That being said, it does have a lot going for it. The finish is surprisingly clean. Not being too familiar with the style I can’t comment too much on it. However, it is not the best black beer I’ve had with a malty character and high alcohol content.
