COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This traditional beer style was originally brewed in countries bordering the Baltic Sea. Although derived from English porters, it was mostly influenced by Russian imperial stouts. Typically, the Baltic porters are brewed with lager yeasts and are smoother than the imperial stouts. Grand Baltic Porter is good for the soul & luxurious on a cold Baltic night. Skal!

Deep, golden brown. Dark tan head, goes away quickly. Mild, resiny hop notes, charcoal and molasses, crispy toasted yeastish(is that a word?) aroma. Flavor earthy with spice hints, alcohol aftertaste. Medium to thick body. Improves as it warms, warms you up from the inside as well... YUM

This one has been languishing, forgotten in the back of the fridge for a while (dated Nov. 2011). Pours dark ruby brown with thin beige head that lasts about 3 seconds and disappears without a trace. Aroma is light, but decently complex - toffee, roasted nuts, licorice, molasses and dried fruit (raisins and dates). Smooth medium-heavy bodied with average carbonation and slight stickiness. The taste is sweet, slightly salty and like the aroma, but more intense with the light and indistinct hops and alcohol coming through in the finish. Overall, even after almost 19 months, this is a pretty good tasting brew, especially for a style that is not one of my favourites.

500 ml bottle shared with czar, thanks mate. Pours a ruby reddish black with a nice beige head. Aroma is burnt caramel, dark chocolate, coffee. Flavor is dark chocolate, molasses, caramel, brown sugar, black cherry, roasted hazelnut. Finish is black coffee, dark chocolate, but not overwhelming in any way. Medium body, sticky mouthfeel. Weak carbonation. An excellent baltic porter.

pours dark brown with a small beige head, some retention. burnt caramel, molasses, lager dark fruitiness, spices, light coconut, raisins, caramelized and buttered nuts - not really diacetyls, roasted dry coffee - hint of acidity. soft carbonation, light to medium body - smooth and not too heavy, nor sweet, just enough grassiness in the finish. remarkable balance, never cloying and classic. definitely what i would hope for in... estonia or lithuania..!

500ml bottle. Dark brown/red pour with a fairly minimal toffee head that leaves a light ring of lace. The nose is remarkably light for the style. Some roasted character and the faintest hint of licorice, light dark fruit. Quite boozy on the palate with a hint of dark chocolate, some stewed fruit and some other dark flavour I can’t put my finger on.

Aroma is one of beer’s most complex features. Aroma is propelled by lively CO2 and dampened by pillowy heads - especially nitrogen foam. Click on a term below to add it to your tasting notes.

Pours a deep brown, almost black colour with small beige foam on top. Aroma of roasty malts. Taste of chocolate, coffee. Sweet beer!

In short: A sticky Baltic Porter marred by salty soy sauce. Meh.
How: Bottle 500ml. Consumed a few weeks after purchase, probably fresh
The look: Very dark brown body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose is rich blackened malts, toffee and a bit of soy sauce. Taste is black liquorice, salty soy sauce, toffee, tar, raisins, spicy notes of red pepper. Alcohol is a bit apparent. Body is a bit sticky. I’m not a big fan of those sweet sticky Baltic Porters and this one had too much salty soy sauce for me to enjoy it. A rather bland beer form Nova Scotia, a very bad beer province, an when an alcoholic craftbeer lover moves out of Nova Scotia to a province with good beer he is considered a recovering meh Addict.

Dark brown in colour with a thin but long lasting tan head, light lacing. The aroma is of dark chocolate, caramel, alcohol, toffee, earth, burnt malts. The flavour is very boozy, thin, liquorice and chocolate. Hot alcoholic mouthfeel, medum/light body, mild carbonation. Finishes long, very hot with lots of booze.

A strange Baltic Porter. Very heavy on the alcohol and too thin.

500ml bottle from the LCBO in Orleans, Ontario.
Opened on May 20, 2012.
No date.

Pours a slightly velvety black with a small carbonation and a small light beige ring of foam. Aroma is slight cedar wood and roasty malts with a some alcohol sting. Taste is a chocolaty roasted slightly bitter malts with a warming tinge of alcohol. Earthy wood overtones.
