COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Heavily roasted malts and full bodied taste characterize this darkest of traditional brews. Martello Stout is uncompromisingly bold like the unique towers which defended our early maritime shores.

Bottle via jerc. Dark brown-black with a small tan head. Good aroma with notes of roast malt, coffee and a bit of smoke. Flavour follows, with the smoke notes becoming a bit more prominent in the finish. Good mouthfeel - a bit thin, perhaps, but more than acceptable. I’m going against the grain, I guess, ’cause I quite liked this one.

The appearance and aroma are fine, but the main flavour I’m getting is a distinctly salty aftertaste. Not a good stout.

341 ml bottle. Pours a thick black with light tan head. Light aromas of dark chocolate and chalk. Metallic, acidic, and bitter. Not great.

Dark pour reddish in light. Nose is coffee, roasted, dry oats. Taste is of coffee. Good beer though.

500 ml bottle. Pillowy tan head that took a while to disappate. Hint of oaty and coffee flavours with a bit of a smoky aroma. Medium body with a creamy texture. Light bitterness on the tail end. Probably the best of the locally-produced stouts.

mcberko (2475) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - FEB 28, 2012
341mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of dry roasted malts, oats, and unsweetened dark cocoa. Flavour is less pleasant, with metallic-tinged dry roasted malt, oats and bittersweet cocoa. There is a bitter, metallic finish that lasts quite a while. Pretty simple and with too many flaws, but drinkable.

500ml bottle pours almost black in color with a quickly receding 2 fingers of light tan head which left some spotted lacing behind. Aroma is light roasted malts and espresso. Taste is a espresso bitterness with some light malty sweetness and light hop bitterness. Not being a coffee drinker, this brew had a little too much coffee flavor for my liking, but is still a decent quality stout.

Atheist_Peace (515) - Halifax, Nova Scotia, CANADA - OCT 29, 2011
500ml bottle. Deep, opaque brown pour with average mocha head that recedes too quickly. The nose is odd for a stout; burnt espresso with a real barnyardy edge and a light hop presence. Good roasty feel in the mouth with a mostly one dimensional espresso taste that finishes with a light bitterness. A little light in the body. Overall more impressive than anything I’ve had from these guys in quite a while which isn’t really saying much.

northropfrye (845) - Steinbach, Manitoba, CANADA - SEP 12, 2011
Bottle. Nice smokey aroma, coffee, dried fruit. Dark cola colour with a brown head. Taste is bitter smokey, but a touch watery, coffee, chocolate. Palate is kind of lackluster, not much happening.

Bottle shared with northropfrye. There’s a spiced smoke aroma which promise much flavour but does not deliver. Very dark, a pretty enough beer, but lacking in taste.
