3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 VENOM (941) - USA - JUL 30, 2002
Filtered light chestnut. Thin foamy off white edge head. Minimal carbonation. Malty aroma of dark roasted caramel, black malts and burnt chocolate. Smooth and mellow. Medium thin body. Malty, but it’s topped with a green pea yeast flavor. Mild malt sweetness with a building acidic edge. Weak malt body but hefty flavor. Lingering charred caramel and chocolate. Finishes a bit fuller, mildly bitter but still with that daunting yeast flavor that tries to overtake the flair of malts. Good, but flawed.

An OK beer, but it’s juuuuuuust over the border to a nut brown, almost just a run-of-the-mill ale. My tongue didn’t get any nuts. Or go nuts for that matter. A little too carbonated, too. But nice for the autumn in Halifax I guess, certainly wasn’t offensive.

Pas méchant, mais surtout pas mémorable. Saveur torrefié mal soutenu, fini assez sec.

Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Nose is nutty, roasted. Easy drinking, malt light smoke almost. Not a bad beer.

341ml bottle from tasters 6-pack pours brown in color with a finger of light beige head which leaves a few spots of lacing behind. Aroma is light roasted malts and chocolate. Taste is light malty sweetness with a hint of chocolate and an earthy nuttiness with some mild hop bitterness as well. Medium bodied and lightly carbonated for a decent enough feel on the palate. Pretty good beer.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Bendrixian (460) - Halifax, Nova Scotia, CANADA - SEP 2, 2011
Pours dark brown colour with some tan head. Has a real smoked aroma to me, some roasted malts and also has a bit of funk. It is a medium bodied brew almost watery lacking real complexity or flavour. although it is one of their better brews.

Draft served in a pint glass at Hart & Thistle. Pours a dark, cloudy chocolate brown with a small tan head. Aroma of toasted barley malts, gritty roast, chocolate, wheat, and toasted sugar. The flavor comes across as a weaker version of the same notes, with an odd, mineral finish. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a mouthfeel that starts nice and toasty before falling out into a minerall mess. My wife, always a sucker for brown ales, liked this more than I did.

341ml bottle. I seem to have found this more nutty and woodsy that the other ratings here, but still good, nonetheless.

Pour copper/burgundy beige head. Aroma chocolate, cocoa, nutty, malt sweetness, mild hopping, farm type aroma. Taste nutty, caramel, toffee, biscuit, malty sweet, beer nuts. MF medium to light body with fine prickly carb. Overall forgettable.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Cole (925) - , Alberta, CANADA - APR 10, 2011
Pours deep chestnut brown with a thick beige head. Deep malty aroma. brown sugar and toffee. some subtle notes of chocolate. smells amazing. Tasted great like an explosion of roasted barley and chocolate dancing with toffee in my mouth. great carbonation and a nice lingering bitterness. it is a bit sweet but one hell of a beer.

Woot! Another afternoon brew. Poured out a nice thick yet small bright tan head that left random islands of sticky lacing on top of a very very dark brown brew. The aroma sucks. I don’t like this harshness what so ever and I don’t think I will have the patience to let this thing sit for half an hour to improve. Yea, there are some nice aromas here but they are all blanketed by a cold and stinky harshness, dirty and unwelcome. 5 minutes of this aroma so far... dammit - I know if I let this evolve it will be better but first impressions, especially when it’s the ONLY impression as one plows away to the next beer. Ok, I had to let this sit and lo and behold all that was suppressed is now making a clearer apperance. Dark chocolate - a choc that is very rich, still some of that old stink coffee filter, background roast, candy sweetness, berries and something that reminds me of bark. The flavour is not weak. Plenty of roasted malts, some coffee, bitter chocolate, a handful of hops, earth, a stiff bitterness of less than medium strength. Decent flavor that sticks to the common mold. Zippy carbonation, under medium bodied, strong roast finish with filter notes. Not my style.
