I somehow forgot to enter this, even though I brought it to the tasting. Amber our with a thin white head. The nose is light malty with a touch of candyish sweetness. A kiss of toasted malt as well. Sweet with a bit of peppery booziness. It’s very light-bodied for a barleywine, but it has a nice dry character. Herbal and a little bit minty. It’s not bad, but it could be a whole lot better.

Hazy brown pour, big beige head, wicked lacing. Huge aroma of piney, resinous hops, and quite a big of bready, booze soaked malts. Low carb, and a high bitterness. Big finish of thick chewy caramel malts, and another wave of resins and bitterness.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2012 Bottled Feb 17, 2010. Dark ruby red in colour; large off white head quickly dies to a fine lacing. Aroma of sweet bready malts, caramel, milk chocolate, hops, currants, raisins prune & fig with some phenolic spice going on too. Flavour is sweet malt, spicy, bitter hops, citric (mainly oranges) with a hint of anise. Good level of carbonation tickling the tongue. Quite a bit of alcohol heat almost kept in check by the bitter sweet (hint of seville orange), long long finish. Leaves your lips nice and sticky. Maybe should have kept this for a while longer to let the alcohol burn mellow a little,

500ml bottle. 2012 Vintage. Pours clear, dark amber with beige head that doesn’t last. There’s a really vinous quality on the nose with a rich maltiness and prune vibe with some graininess. The alcohol tickles the nose. Has the texture of driveway sealant, carbonated. Big, rich maltiness up front with that prune feel flowing through. Then it falls apart and finishes with a sickening sweet burning sensation that goes on forever.

Pours super clear, deep ruby amber colour.Totally see-through, little but of carb, thin head with big bubbles. Quickly fizzes away. Smell is a lot of deep caramel malt and a nice sharp spicy note. Can smell the alcohol. Smells like there might be some bitterness, I know that’s weird, you cant smell bitter, but its like it doesn’t smell like its going to be sickly sweet. It seems as though there will be some hoppy bitterness in it, but there isn’t really anything other than a strong spicy character from the hop going on. Might be from the alcohol… what do I know, I probably only drink molson. Taste starts off intense caramel deep rich malt, and the spice, but then you start to get some alcohol flavour, like a very very faint brandy like sharpness, and pleasant bright red fruit sweetness cuts through everything. Gradually replaced by a nice hop bitterness, its not too intense, but its definitely there. Alcohol warmth really carries through. Bordering on heat, but it’s a nice intense warmth that spreads through your throat. Finish is alcohol and spiciness. Mouth feel is great, medium to full, the carb is perfect, not very bubbly at all. Very nice Barley Wine.
