   AROMA 6/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 13/20
Alengrin (2076) - BELGIUM - OCT 17, 2014
This rating concerns the original version, i.e. made by the former brewer of Gaverhopke. This was his magnum opus so to speak, an ’abt’ with loose, unstable, dirty yellowish white head and dark wine red colour, hazy. Strong estery aroma, caramel, port wine, chocolate, candi syrup, pear, elderberries, brambleberries, raisins, cloves, some DMS (red cabbage) and a subtle sulphuric H2S hint, fortunately not present in all the bottles. The taste was estery, sweet without stickiness, caramelly, smooth, meaty and earthy, very yeasty, port wine hint in the finish, warming alcohol, low hop bitterness. Clearly inspired by Westvleteren 12 but well below that quality level, though I did find this to be an interesting beer with a somewhat different personality than usual in this style; the current version from the people who have taken over this brewery, shows better and more professional brewing quality (no H2S) but a bit less distinction and personality, in my opinion.

Mainuh_man (173) - NETHERLANDS - OCT 17, 2014
Pours clear dark brown with basically no head. Sweet malt aromas, caramel, raisin, licorice, alcohol. Very sweet flavor, with lots of caramel and alcohol. Enough bittering hops to balance things a bit at the end. Full body with a sticky mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Overall, a strong, desert beer. Nice malt flavor, not much complexity, but tasty.

Alhoewel ik graag zware bieren drijk, vond ik de smaak van deze maar niets. Dan zijn er betere

Reddish brown beer, with sadly no head. Nice sweet full bodied brew. Malty and dark fruits and caramel. Better as expected.
