Aroma is malts, grains, a bit fruity and grassy. Sweetish grainy flavor is wood and some fruitiness with warming, sugary and hoppy finish.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 RSRIZZO (1634) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - NOV 28, 2008
Color is amber with a slight haze and very good carbonation that creates a big fluffy head. Aroma of caramel and alcohol. Taste is smooth and rich. Starting with light/medium body it goes down with a smooth almost creamy feel. Finish comes on with a mild sweet roasted malt flavor and some brown sugar then a faint bitterness. Alcohol stands out in the after taste with the bitterness building up a bit. This is a tasty little brew that comes across sweet and warm.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Brigadier (1837) - Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA - NOV 26, 2008
Bottle
I picked this up at Chuck’s and finally got around to opening it. This isn’t a bad beer but lately I have been having a hard time getting into biere de gardes. It may be a bit longer before I explore the style again unless I run across it at a brewpub.
Aroma / Appearance - A huge pillowy head settled into a reddish bronze body. Malty with the smell of brown rice and mellow hops it tickles the senses. As you would expect it has a certain farmhouse feel.
Flavor / Palate - Light and wheaty it reminds me of white bread with honey drizzled on it. A light sour aftertaste is not intense at all. Somewhere between a session beer and a sipping beer by the way it tastes I am surprised to see it is actually 8.5%. I would have pegged it at somewhere around 6% tops.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 drfabulous (2139) - Lexington, Kentucky, USA - NOV 18, 2008
Sour red. pours a lot of head. really good aroma. I love the smell of a sour red. Cherries and tart all in one. While not very complex and slightly thin, an ok sour red all around, but the after taste does not linger well. Feels flat
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 austone (1062) - Turku; Pori, FINLAND - NOV 16, 2008
UPDATED: DEC 30, 2008 33cl bottle. Deep sparkling golden, huge foaming pale head. Quite metallic nose, little brewing mash, maltiness and alcohol. Warming alcoholic flavor, little dried fruits and wheat, almost no hops, same metallic tinge. Medium bodied, smooth silky carbonation. There’s really nothing to remember here, besides the cool bottle/label. Too bad.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 FatPhil (5965) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - OCT 24, 2008
330ml bottle (Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam)
Deep reddy orange, lightly hazy, large frothy head. Initially fruity aroma, turns nutty amd hoppy quite soon. Carbonation is a little harsh, lively in the mouth. Taste is a little alcoholic, and has several savoury components, and a touch of burntness to the malts. However, the overriding direction is a tingly bitterness. Big biting finish. As you dink it, the harshness subsides and it ends up being very tasty indeed. And the finish remains long.
