BOTM bottle. Reddish copper pour with a huge fizzy cream head. Aroma of barnyard malt and grains. Taste of hops with an oaky finish.

Bottle purchased at Coaltrain Wine and Liquor. Pours hazy amber with a large, frothy, off-white head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is average malt (hay, straw, meal), average hops (flowers, herbs, grass), average yeast (horse blanket, barnyard) with notes of apple, grape, wine, and dust. Medium bodied, slick texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.

Admirable and respectable but no fireworks of love for this one. Not as complex as I imagined. A bit of plum thickness with the flowerly hop taste backing it up. Dark red appearance is attractive but the flavor wasn’t a complete resonating delight. Herbal and faint biscuit mix didn’t flow so well for my palate. Fine to have again but won’t seek out.

33 cl. No date. WTF, if this is a "beer for keeping" then put a date stamp on it! Opaque dark copper with some red tints. Gushing head settles to a lasting thick cream with nice lace. Nice aroma of raisin, candi sugar and funky yeast. Similar flavors plus touches of acidic berry, vanilla, caramel, oak and some drying/warming alcohol on the finish.

Pour is a dark red with a very large tan head. Aroma is lots of caramel malts and a bit of honey. Flavor is super dry and dusty. It also has a very weird berry with some cloves and spice. Finsh is a little pepper and sour. A decent beer but more of a Belgian strong than A BDG.

Bottle. 11.2 fl. oz. Slightly hazy, ruby color with nice, silky cream-colored head. Excellent lacing and longevity. Aromas of fruit, vanilla, caramel, and light alcohol. Medium bodied with a smooth texture and light, dry finish. Flavor is fairly sweet and fruity all the through with a faint bitterness. Smoothes out nicely as it warms.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2008 330mL bottle my parents brought back for me on a recent trip to Quebec that I couldn’t go on. This one pours a deep dark burgundy, slightly hazy with a HUGE beige head. Aroma is really different, booze, mild caramel malt, and major barnyard funkyness. I kind of dig it actually, despite it being totally bizarre to me. Complex funk. Like George Brown! Flavour is really neat, great malty sweetness the whole way through, lots of the sour funk upfront, mixed up with boozy notes, all making way for sweet and sour malt notes. Big mouth-feeI, with some very apparent alcohol warming. All about the malts, but as it warms some hops do make an appearance in this finish to add some bite along with the alcohol. I really do dig it, and I’m happy I do because I was afraid that I might not like it. Nothing at all like the only other Biere de Garde I’ve had, nor really like anything I’ve ever had. This one is a pretty funky beer in every sense of the word. Cool.

Bottle. I dig this one. Not very often does it happen, but for a Biere de Garde (even though its a stretch to call it that), I’m into it. Darker red pour leads to a of fruity and minor nut flavors that go well with the carbonation. Finish lingers on a tiny hop note...good stuff.
