Gavroche was a generous and rebellious Paris urchin and a character in the Victor Hugo (1802-1885) novel “Les Misérables.” It is also a strong, amber beer, where the flavour of its top-fermentation yeast combines perfectly with the taste of the special malts. Fermented again in the bottle, the Gavroche beer should be served with care between 10 and 12°C.

Pours a perfectly clear reddish orange with a decent enough head. The aroma is fruity and deeply nutty with some root herb. The hoppiness is both bright and earthy. The aroma is rye bread and some mild fruity sweetness. Overall this beer is nicely dry and has some complimentary pear and peppery notes. The carbonation is lively.

An amber beer that has the appearance and smell of a vienna lager, it transforms completely upon quaffing. Aromas of amber malt as it reaches the mouth, there is a sudden burst of mild, flowery hops with a hint of spice and hay, tiny bit of acid in the finish nicely accompanied by a barnyard scent. Aftertaste lingers; toffee and smooth caramel, hint of chocolate and herbs. Very nice beer, a surprising mix of ale and lager-like qualities with a hint of wild fermentation.

Amber color with off-white frothy head. Malty and fruity aroma with hints of alcohol. Up front caramel malt sweetness followed by a quick bitterness. Long sweet fruit finish. Well balanced, creamy, full bodied beer.

I got a very nasty shoc when I opened this bottle. The hiss of the cap being opened preempted a rush of amber beer cascading over the shoulders of the bottle and all over the table, my computer keyboard and nearly all over my new cellphone. What was left in the bottle turned out a gorgeous brown-amber with aromas of gum, spicy stewed apricots with allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg. Full aromas and sweet malt. The flavour is spicy again and there’s definite stonefruit, flan and biscuits. But it’s much more complex than that. There’s tang to it and a gentle warming bitterness that lingers long after the fluid has gone down the neck. This is full and very tasty. Memorable.

On tap at Bangers & Lace. Pours clear dark amber with moderate lacing. Aroma is malty and spicy. Flavor is deep rich malts and a moderate amount of spice. Notable fruit presence with a moderate alcohol bite as well. Pretty good medium bodied biere de garde.

Slightly hazy. Powerful flavor, lots of malt. Sugar and hops and alcohol in a very harmonic balance. Dried fruit in the aroma, flavor of christmass bread and toasted nuts. Refreshing and tempting.

Bottle at home. Bought it at the St Albans Beer festival four months ago and couldn’t wait any longer. Reddish gold, plentiful carbs and a big off-white head. A hint of strawberries adds to an earthy, yeasty, malty aroma. A pleasant metallic adage also identifiable in the aroma. Taste is bittersweet, doughy and alcoholic (but not too much so). Full creamy texture with the carbonation adds to the palette. Long complex finish. A proper treat. I’m surprised at how nice this is.
