COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle; Unfiltered.
Gavroche was a generous and rebellious Paris urchin and a character in the Victor Hugo (1802-1885) novel “Les Misérables.” It is also a strong, amber beer, where the flavour of its top-fermentation yeast combines perfectly with the taste of the special malts. Fermented again in the bottle, the Gavroche beer should be served with care between 10 and 12°C.

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark amber almost brown color - not what I was expecting. Aroma is heavily laden with wild honey, some grain, light grassy hops, but it is really the honey character that comes through. Taste is sweet honey, some cereal and very light hoppiness, especially sweet though. Palate is not sticky despite the very sweet flavor, pretty dry although not really relatively to other examples of this style. Not bad but a bit too heavy for me.

750 ml corked bottle with that nifty french BdG metal clasp; clear, dark amber with thick light tan head; aroma mix of sweet honey and lemons mixed with an almost light cherry syrup and stale malt; first sip has an off-putting bitterness and astringency; crisp mouthfeel with some mild fruity and stale hay flavors; stale raspberry honey with sole husky grain notes; not digging this BdG interpretation too much

Brilliant dark red with a thick, eggshell head. An interesting malty aroma that is huge on the mint and cough syrup, not unlike a Hall's Cough Drop. However, underneath the initial liquid smelling-salts is a bunch of cereal and sweet caramel. Sharp, fizzy mouthfeel that isn't exactly thin but is certainly not thick. Interesting flavors that fit very well into the Bière de Garde style. I've never really known how to articulate them, but they are sort of like buttery malt. There is more mint and alcohol in the flavor as well. Also, light fruitiness, not too unlike some diet cherry cola. Heavy malts with bright hops and tons of alcohol make for an interesting beer. Despite decent the aroma and flavors, something seems to be a bit off here. The mint is so strong and unlike anything else I've ever experienced. I'm glad I bought it, but I doubt I would venture back to this one again.

Bottled. Amber color with large fluffy head. Malty, caramelly, toffeish and lightly fruity aroma with some tart alcohol and vanilla. Sweetish and tart flavor with toffee, caramel and restrained fruitiness. Strongly carbonated. The combination of caramel and tartness is somewhat repulsive.

Very aromatic, floral/hops mainly, but some skunkiness/alcohol at the end. Cloudy amber body with a nice big head. I generally agree with other raters’ comments, nice mouthfeel, but too much bite on the aftertaste.

UPDATED: JAN 10, 2007 Bottle. Beautiful, totally cloudy auburn pour yields a firm, sticky head. Aroma is slightly tart at first pour, though quickly transforms into a spicy autumn type brew... cinnamon, green apple pie, roasty malts, nutmeg, plump plums. Very nice. Flavor is dissappointing, considering the great aroma... malty, and very harsh, overwhelming minerals and a chunky, bad almond kind of aftertaste.

Medium Gold Coloring wtih White Head. Dark Malt...Chocolaty with a Belgian Yeast Aroma. Belgian Yeast, Dark Malts..Syrapy Caramel and Chocolate.. Light Spices. An Overall Note of Cardboard. Dry Yeasty and Spicy Ending. Perhaps Requiring Aging Before More Palatable...Currently I Find it a Bit Challenging to Have a Good Understanding With.

11.2oz bottle, no date. Pours a clear orange with slight red highlights and a one finger+ light yellowish beige head. Pretty good retention. It should be noted that this gushed and foamed all over while I ran to the sink--overall loss was probably only a couple ounces. Aroma is yeast, cinnamon, sugar cookies, some cherries and light cough syrup. Flavor has strong alcoholic notes, stale bread dough, some light cherry tang, spices (cinnamon being predominant), Semidry finish with a little stale bitterness. Light to moderate carbonation, medium body. This beer seems past its prime.
