Euro strong lager presenting itself as "once the strongest beer in the world" - which was probably not even true in a time when the amount of beers of 12+% ABV could still be counted on the fingers of one hand. Thanks Marie for the bottle! Moussy, medium sized, stable, snow white head over a clean warm orange blonde beer with amberish hue. Aroma of candied orange, Grand Marnier, cooked potato, gin, honey, caramel, melting rubber, cognac, sweet breakfast cereals. Very sweet onset but no esters, this is very clearly a lager using sugar to cheaply and artificially boost alcohol levels; caramelized effect reinforced by caramelly maltiness, medium carbo, smooth and oily mouthfeel. The sugary sweetness sticks till the end, pasteurization is unmistakable retronasally and, unsurprisingly, the finish is dominated more by alcohol than anything else, with a heating, astringent, raw effect, like some cheap wodka; something sulfuric lingers as well. Comes from a fancy - but very traditional looking - bottle instead of the usual 50 cl cans commonly used for this type of beer in the more nothern and eastern European countries practicing this style, but it is just the same kind of boring, overly sugary and burning alcoholic strong lager as any other. Doubtlessly heavily inspired by Belzebuth in terms of style, flavor, marketing and label.

Bottiglia.

Mrs brought me a bottle of this back from a trip to Paris. Pours clear golden, slightly orange, with an initially frothy white head. Aroma is of alcohol though not too overpowering, notes of orange, lavender(?), and grass. Medium to heavy sweetness, and a sharp bitterness which gives way quickly to something a lot more mellow. Medium body, texture quite sticky. Not bad at all, didn’t feel like 12%. Got better the more of the bottle I drink.
