The pour produces a slightly hazy orange/gold with a creamy white head that leaves great lacing. The nose is grainy, with corn husk, floral hops, honey and not much else. The flavour is equally grainy, with notes of corn, leafy hops, and that characteristic funky vegetal high-fermentation temp flavour. Bier de Garde’s have never been my thing, but this one really turned me off. It just tastes rotten. The palate, despite the flavour, is very nice, as it is creamy, appropriately carbonated and slightly warming in the finish, that ends a little syrupy though.

(75 cl bottle at Ambleteuse, France) Very bitter aroma and taste. Palate is also overwhelmed by the bitterness. Not a pleasant beer in my opinion.

Frovigalning (1320) - Örebro, SWEDEN - MAR 22, 2009
Clear golden colour with a medium foam, which left a nice lacing. The smell is weak, either I’m sick or this smelled like water. Has an alcoholic tastem also bread, malty with a hint of pears or apples. The aftertaste had a hint of honey. The taste improved when the temperature went up. An easy to drink beer but also slightly boring.

porterhouse (1482) - Alna, Maine, USA - MAR 15, 2009
(750 ml bottle (stamped "05 28 09") from Belfast Co-op) Pours slightly hazy light amberish gold with a tall meringue-like off-white head that receds to a stiff, foamy cap. Aroma initially of some Band Aid, then citrus, bread, yeast and caramel. Mouthfeel smooth, fairly light. Foamy rings and sheets of lacing. Tastes of citrus, caramel and pepper with some yeast. Has a sweet and sour quality (citrus = sour, caramel = sweet) esp. as it warms. A little hot. Finishes a bit bitter.

Starts with an appealing funky smell giving way to a bready yeastiness. Even the cork was funky. Clear golden pour, large white fluffy head. Simple flavor profile, sugary sweet bready malts, faint touch of phenol and some higher alcohols warming the finish. Fairly heavy touch of caramel. No esters. High carbonation but not overly fizzy-harsh on the palate, the thicker malts interact with the effervescence to give a smooth fullness.

En snäll öl som förgyller strupen med lika delar sötma och beska. Påminner en hel del om Duvel. Definitivt en av de bättre i sin prisklass.
