In the XIV century, the good beers were called Goudale, Goudalle or Good Ale. There were sold for 2 deniers a pot at a merchant called Goudalier.

Bottled, Goudale is certainly not a good ale. Aroma of a strong lager, bit yeasty. Looks like one too, some darker gold and thicker head maybe. The taste of alcohol doesn’t do justice to the herby palate, but this still doesn’t live up the the magnificient Gavroche.

(Bottled) Clear golden with a smallish-medium, frothy head. Grainy-malty, slightly sweet-honeyish aroma with traces of rice. Something between Leffe Blonde and Russian Pale Lagers. Quite grainy-malty, neutral-sweetish flavor with some familiar, yeasty Belgian-style sourness, and fresh, grassy hops. Medium-bodied, quite soft-carbonated palate. I think this is quite close to what Page 24 Hildegarde Blonde would be with carbonation. A sweetish and straightforward, but easy and quite enjoyable summer ale.

Can: Golden color with a cream long lasting white head. The aroma is a spicy bready hoppy smell. The taste is very bitter metallic with floral bite, the finish is dry.

75cl bottle. Golden colour, large and persistent creamy head. Spicy, quite hoppy and malty, full-bodied. Lovelly flowery hops from Falnders. I often use this beer as a present for people who like beer, but have no idea there are more beer styles than lager and Pilsener.

Bottle picked up in Lille Carrefour 30-07-07. Pours clear light golden colour, some fruitiness, bitterness ok but yeast and spiciness most noticeable, ok.

Clear blonde body with a short-lived medium white head. Grainy malts and chewy cereals make for a nice medium-full bready body. Medium honey sweetness with a light sugary note. All that is well balanced by grassy dry hops providing a mild but sharp bitterness. Forget about fruity flavours, spices or whatever. This is a very simple but well balanced effective blonde ale. I can’t help but to thinks that this malt profile and hopping would have been more appropriate in a lager environment but overall this was a pretty Goud ale.

[Sampled in 2005.] Has some ingredients and the flavor is ok. Notes of fruits, yeasty bitterness, caramel, lightbodied. No my favorite, but ok.

500 ml can: poured golden yellow with a quickly fading medium sized white ehad. Mild grain and yeast aroma with a hint of banana. The first sip of this thing made me want to pour it down the drain. It was quite metallic and somewhat bitter. The alcohol seemed overwhelming. Subsequent sips the metallic taste toned down. Still that alcohol is coming through more than I like. Yeast, banana, grain, some sourness, and alcohol in the flavor. I’ll avoid it next time.

75 cl bottle purchased in Paris. Clear gold color. Head was two fingers high and white, eventually reducing to a thin film. Smelled of clove, honey, yeasty bread dough, and malty cereal grain. Effervescent with clove, alcohol, raw vegetables, and pale malt flavors. Delicate hop bitterness at the end on the back of the tongue.
