In the XIV century, the good beers were called Goudale, Goudalle or Good Ale. There were sold for 2 deniers a pot at a merchant called Goudalier.

Quite unimpressive with loads of caramel and oranges in the aroma. Also massy of sugar poured in to make that beer drinkable. It is indeed. And nothing else.

0.75 l bottle bought in France. Unfortunately I had two unpleasant Biere de Garde experiences before, why I was little bit scared about that but the quite nice bottle (and later the RB score) gave me some hope. But unfortunately I was let down again. Appearance is quite nice: Clear orange-golden colour with low steady head and medium to smooth body. Nose was still alright: Hops and malt. But the taste!! Oh, Allmighty! Awful. It tastes of dusty dull hops, basement, rotten leaves, cemetary, rain forrest and sour barley. Hints of mint with orange toothpaste for kids. Awful bitter-sour finish. Happy that I don’t have any other Biere de Garde left at home (at least I think so).

Bottle from Systembolaget. Clear dark golden with a frothy white head. It has a very sweet note in the aroma of caramel honey, fruity esters, malt and some spicy yeast. Taste is light honey up front and then a light bitterness which is finally overrun by the crispy caramel honey finish.

Clean golden color, medium white head. Aroma of wheat, malt and orange peel. Taste is dry sweet with wheat, yeast, malt and some spices. Medium body and soft carbonation, slightly alcoholic aftertaste.

Pours clear amber with low white head. Aroma of bretta, coriander, spices (rosemsry, oregano, thyme), light citrus, light honey. Taste is yeasty wheaty sweet with honey and some malt. Light body with average to lively carbonation. Not very balanced... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, 75cl. Pours a clear golden colour with a velvety white head. Aroma is pretty faint, not much going on. Taste is better than the aroma suggests. Quite sweet, but lacking character. Good beer

So, the French recently have been making inroads to microbrewing of sorts. I have been a fan of 3 Monts to a dregree from way back, this beer was much more drinkable for a variety of reasons for the similar style they represent. La Goudale was very balanced overall, but had that familiar bier de garde funkiness on the back end. However, the carbonation was very prevalent, which I like for its scrubbing of the palate while eating certain foods. Had it with a garbanzo bean salad with bleu cheese dressing. It worked!

Bottle from a trade with Cunningham. Pours clear golden with a huge creamy white head. Aroma is malty, cellar and earth. Taste is sweet malty, also some sweetness from the alcohhols, light fruity as well.

75cl in a good company. A beer with a golden yellow with a nice head. A bit bitter at start but sweet at the end. Nice beer!
