So, the French recently have been making inroads to microbrewing of sorts. I have been a fan of 3 Monts to a dregree from way back, this beer was much more drinkable for a variety of reasons for the similar style they represent. La Goudale was very balanced overall, but had that familiar bier de garde funkiness on the back end. However, the carbonation was very prevalent, which I like for its scrubbing of the palate while eating certain foods. Had it with a garbanzo bean salad with bleu cheese dressing. It worked!

750 ml. bottle. Amber colour with a persistent head, lace and ring all over. Smell of honey, chocolate, caramel, ripened fruits and brandy. Medium to full body, it pass through your tongue very easily, but leaving an alcohol feeling. Taste is alcoholic, honeoy, fruits, caramel, flowers and some chocolate.

On tap at la gaiete in lille. Flavor is outstandingly well balanced for a bdg. Roasted and fruity notes come through with expected flavor of the type. Very solid beer.

750ml bottle - clear yellow golden body, thin white top. Not much in the way of nose, a bit grassy, a certain estery note. Loads of spiciness on the taste, bready notes, dough, nice Belgian elements to this. Aftertaste of banana and clove, gives the impression of a wheat beer on the way out... strange, but I like this a lot.

I might not be totaly impartial since that beer is frome my hometown, but there I go... Goudale is a "Bière de Garde", a beer very close to the Belgian blond ales, Nice beer to appreciate flemish food, and may be used to cook "welsh" and "carbonade flamande". The beer has some grassy and metallic notes, witch is usual on Biere de Garde made with flemish hops, but has a sweater finish, with a bit of caramel and banana. The beer has a little bit higher level of bitterness as the average Belgian blond ale, but is still quite light, with a pinch of astringence. Goudale one of the cheapest ale you may find in almost any supermarket in France. That fact taken in account, Goudale might be one of the best balanced, all-purpose beer. Of course, because it’s a cheap beer, it’s not 100% Barley, nor very hoppy and lacks a bit of temper, but as an affordable ale, it’s a very nice one, overall.
